Ja Rule Compares Fyre Festival to the Titanic, But in a Good Way: It’s Like “If They Built the Titanic, And It Worked”

It’s practically impossible to walk away from Fyre Festival and think, “That was great, let’s do it again,” and yet, Ja Rule seems to be doing just that. On Sunday night, the rapper stopped by Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, where he was (understandably) pressed about his involvement in the failed music festival. Ja Rule insisted that unlike Fyre Festival organizer Billy McFarland, he did not commit a crime, and he defended his plan to bring back the festival. “I have the biggest festival in the world, even though it never happened,” he told host Andy Cohen, adding that it’s like “if they built the Titanic, and it worked.”

During a “Rapid Fyre” Q&A session, Ja Rule addressed his role in the fraud, his current (non) relationship with McFarland, and his plans for the future. When asked about the “biggest misconception about [his] involvement in Fyre Festival,” the rapper insisted it’s that he “committed a crime.” Replied Cohen, “In one of the documentaries, you called the festival ‘fake advertising,’ but not a fraud.” Ja Rule has since had time to reflect upon that statement. “I believe now, after everything unraveled, it was a little of both,” he told the WWHL host.

Cohen then asked about Ja Rule’s new WE tv show, Growing Up Hip Hop: New York. “In a sneak peek of your WE show, you express to your kids that you plan on re-doing the festival. Why do you think people would trust you to go to that festival?” asked Cohen. “Well, I mean, it wasn’t my fault, right?” asked Ja Rule with a laugh. “Here’s the thing, Andy: I want to do it the right way with the right partners. And here’s what I happen to know. I have the biggest festival in the world, even though it never happened.”

“You mean, with the most name recognition,” said Cohen. “Right, that never happened. There’s value in that, Andy,” said Ja Rule. For the first time in the gamelet, Cohen pushed back. “It’s not the most positive — I mean, it’s like calling a ship the Titanic,” replied the host, much to the audience’s pleasure. “Well, if they built the Titanic, and it worked –” said Ja Rule, trailing off. Still not the metaphor you’re looking for, dude.
