Lock your door and prepared to be terrified by the very worst of humanity. USA’s horror series The Purge is now on a major streaming service. And if you’re looking for a crazy, semi-trashy, scary binge watch, you’d be hard pressed to find anything better.

Created by James DeMonaco, the creator behind every Purge movie, the show takes place in the same universe as the four-movie franchise of the same name. By now you know the drill: Every year for a 12-hour period all crime is legal in an effort to promote peace the rest of the year. Allegedly. Of course, as is always the case, this is all just a distraction designed by the government and the upper class to keep the middle and lower classes at war with one another.

The series follows a group of seemingly unconnected characters as they try to survive another annual night from hell. Up this time we have Miguel (Gabriel Chavarria), a U.S. Marine who comes home during Purge Night after receiving a mysterious message from his sister who is definitely in a cult; Jane (Amanda Warren), an executive who decides to use the night to hire a hitman to break her company’s glass ceiling once and for all; Jenna (Hannah Emily Anderson), an anti-Purge advocate whose decision to stumble out this night forces her to question her morals, and Rick. No, not Rick Sanchez from that one Rick and Morty episode. Rick Betancourt (Colin Woodell), Jenna’s husband who spent his whole life sucking up to the Purge elites. But it turns out becoming buddies with a group of evil masterminds dedicated to making the poor fight and pillage to the death wasn’t the best idea. Who knew?

They all come together in unexpected ways during this most violent time of the year. There are cults, mysterious hooded strangers, and all sorts of bonkers death scenes. It’s a bloody good time.

Here at Decider, we’re not going to lie to you: The Purge is objectively not a good show. The entire premise of this franchise is patently insane, and the USA series doesn’t do much to question or elevate it. But sometimes all you want out of entertainment is a few hours of terror while you yell at stupid characters being stupid. If that’s the sort of catharsis you’re looking for, The Purge needs to be your next binge watch. Just remember to stock up while you’re spending the night inside.
