Netflix Unveils First Trailer for Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’

The wait is over: Netflix has finally released the first trailer for Martin Scorsese‘s The Irishman. Starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and more, the drama tells the story of Frank Sheeran (De Niro), a hustler and hitman who becomes involved with union boss Jimmy Hoffa around the time of his still-unsolved kidnapping. In true Scorsese style, The Irishman trailer features plenty of dark colors, men taking suspicious phone calls, and a threatening score. Who’s ready for Oscars season?

Scorsese’s The Irishman trailer first introduces viewers to Frank, a small-time hitman who receives a phone call from Hoffa (a very young looking Pacino). The Teamsters boss recruits Frank to do join his organization — in what capacity remains to be seen — and do some dirty work for him. “Well, you know, there’s a situation going on now, Frank,” says Hoffa. “Big business and the government, they’re trying to pull us down.” As shots of Kennedy’s campaign turn into shots of his funeral, Hoffa continues, “Do you want to be a part of this, Frank? Would you like to be a part of this history?”

“Yes, I would,” replies Frank. “Whatever you need me to do, I’m available.” And with that, De Niro’s fate is sealed. Hopefully Frank ends up luckier than Jimmy Hoffa.

The new Netflix trailer is the first time fans have gotten a good look at the de-aged De Niro, Pesci, and Pacino. The “youthification” process delayed the film for months, with Scorsese revealing in May that he was “concerned” that the digital effect would alter the “intensity” and “threat” in his actors’ eyes. Fear not, Marty: every second of The Irishman trailer is as intense and threatening as possible.

This week, the New York Film Festival announced that Scorsese’s drama was chosen as the Opening Night selection at this year’s event. In the past, the coveted slot has introduced the world to major Oscar contenders like The Social Network and Gone Girl; we won’t know for months whether The Irishman will continue that trend, but the sheer talent featured in the film makes it seem likely.

The Irishman will premiere in select theaters and on Netflix this Fall. Watch the trailer above.
