Hulu announced during their Summer TCA session that all 10 episodes of Marvel’s Runaways Season 3 will be available to stream on December 13, 2019. They also confirmed that this season will feature a storyline wherein Nico Minoru (Lyrica Okano) would draw “them all into a dark realm where its ruler Morgan le Fay, played by Elizabeth Hurley, is much more nefarious than anyone the kids have yet to face.” When Decider sat down with executive producer Josh Schwartz to talk about his upcoming Hulu limited series Looking for Alaska, we asked how Hurley was doing as Morgan le Fay.
“She’s awesome,” Schwartz enthused. “First table read, with her accent…she just brought it. It’s going to be so badass, and she’s going to be amazing.”
Hurley for her part has cheekily teased on Instagram that she’s hanging by the pool rather than learning lines.
Schwartz confirmed that Morgan le Fey “has a really big storyline with Nico,” and he also explained why it’s taken three seasons for Marvel’s Runaways to get freaky with its mystical side.
“This season we’re getting much more into magic. You know, when we started on the show, there were certain ground rules with Marvel Television and things needing to be more grounded, and those reins have loosened and we’re taking full advantage of it,” Schwartz said.
Marvel’s Runaways hit Hulu at the peak of the Marvel’s Defenders era. All of those Netflix shows are set on the ground in New York City and feature way more “grounded” versions of the Marvel superheroes we see on the screen. In the last year Netflix has cancelled each of its Marvel shows and Marvel Studios has announced a series of original shows for Disney+. Schwartz suggested that pushing Runaways away from this “grounded” reality had been an ongoing process.
“Last year, we obviously to expand into the sci-fi realm, and we’ll continue to do that this year,” he said, “but there’s also a whole lot of magic going on and I think that’s going to be awesome.”
Marvel’s Runaways Season 3 premieres on December 13.
