The final season of AMC’s Preacher is almost here, and there’s going to be hell to pay. Or rather, Heaven, as Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) is headed towards a reckoning with God, something he’s been aiming for since the very first episode of the show. And all that comes to a head in the Season 4 trailer, which was just revealed last night (July 20) at San Diego Comic-Con.
Based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher stars Cooper as Custer, a conflicted preacher who finds himself gifted with The Word, a power that allows him to command anyone to do anything. Along with his sometimes on, sometimes off girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and vampire friend Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), he hits the road to find God and ask him why he’s basically abandoned the human race.
Along the way, Custer and company have encountered everything from the actual Hitler (Noah Taylor), to the Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish), an unstoppable murderer with a serious chip on his shoulder. They’ve also repeatedly tangled with The Grail, an organization now led by Herr Starr (Pip Torrens), a one-eyed fanatic whose head looks sort of like a penis.
Oh yeah, probably also important to mention — if you haven’t gathered already — Preacher is extremely irreverent, mercilessly poking holes in religion while still exploring why we’re spiritual, and what it means to the world. That makes a lot of sense based on the behind the scenes team: the show was created by Sam Catlin, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen, a trio known for their ~hot takes~.
In the final season of the show, The Grail has captured Cassidy at their new home base of Masada, amassed an army ready to cause the apocalypse, and generally are ready to end everything, for good. Jesse is also ready though, and between God, the Grail, and his fraught relationship with Cassidy is ready to end things, as well. Suffice to say that when it all does go down, it’s going to be explosive.
Preacher Season 4 debuts August 4 on AMC.
