Point Blank (2019)

Ahhh, Friday at last. You’ve survived another work week and now you can treat yourself to another summer weekend full of barbecue and binge-watching. There are an impressive amount of new movies and TV shows hitting Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO this weekend, so keep your fridge well-stocked and start exploring!

The big budget action remake we have all been waiting for is finally hitting Netflix this weekend. In Point Blank, Anthony Mackie plays a hospital nurse who is unwittingly thrown into a murder conspiracy and multi-faceted plot in order to save his growing family. A remake of the 2010 French film by the same name, Point Blank explores what action movies look like when the protagonist is not a character formerly trained in combat.

In Gone Baby Gone, private investigator Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) takes on a case looking for a kidnapped girl in working-class Boston, uncovering a maze of corruption and deceit that make him and his partner question their morality and roles as human beings. Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman also star in this star-studded and widely-acclaimed film.

Potterheads get your wands at the ready, because Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is being released on HBO this weekend. In the second installment of the Harry Potter prequel, Gellert Grindelwald –played by the unsettling Johnny Depp– has escaped custody and has begun to set his dark plan into motion: to raise pure-blooded wizards up to rule over the muggle world. Recruited by a young and dashing Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his crew from the MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) must stop his plan before it is too late.

Point Blank

The latest thriller to hit Netflix is Point Blank, starring Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Endgame) and Frank Grillo (Zero Dark Thirty). A remake of the 2010 French film by the same name, this big-budget action movie is about what happens when Paul, an emergency room nurse (Mackie) and family man is thrown into the middle of a crime war when a mysterious team of people abducts his pregnant wife from his home. Pairing up with an injured murder suspect (Grillo), Paul must navigate warring criminals, dirty cops and the truth to do whatever it takes to save his family.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Eddie Redmayne is back as Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. This time, however, things start to get a little personal. Powerful dark wizard and criminal mastermind Gellert Grindelwald has escaped from custody and is working to realize his world domination plan that would have pure-blooded witches and wizards ruling over all muggles in the world. Scamander, pushed by a young, dashing Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law- swoon!) must go on a quest to find the one person who can defeat Grindelwald once and for all. A sequel full of mystery, magic, and misplaced love, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will reveal even more about the origins of the Harry Potter series, and the key players in it.

Gone Baby Gone

Enjoy Ben Affleck’s directorial debut in Gone Baby Gone, a mystery film about two private investigators who are hired to track down a kidnapped little girl. But like in all detective stories, not everything is black and white and the investigators find there is a lot more to the story than they initially thought. Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, and Morgan Freeman star in the critically-acclaimed film.
