The White Walkers Might Be Coming Back to ‘Game of Thrones’

It sure looked like Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) soundly defeated the Night King in Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 3, “The Long Night,” but we might not have seen the last of the White Walkers yet. Believe it or not, but Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss couldn’t confirm that the White Walkers were gone for good. The two were interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night and when Kimmel straight up asked the duo about the White Walkers, they acted rather awkwardly. Weiss made a weird face and Benioff said, “Yeah, we’re not going to answer that.”

Kimmel also asked if Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) knew that Arya would kill the Night King, and Weiss said, “Possibly,” with a smile. When the late night host followed that up by asking, “Will someone take the Iron Throne?”, Weiss again said, “Possibly.”

Still their response to the White Walkers question should have us worried. Could there be other White Walkers lurking up North waiting to spring on our heroes? Yes, but it could also be that Craster’s sons — whom we know the Night King wanted to transform into some kind of White Walker baby force — are just crawling around with some babysitting ice spiders far beyond the Wall.

In any event, the final three episodes are all supposed to be super-sized like “The Long Night.” Sunday’s episode will be 78 minutes long, and Episode 5, directed by Game of Thrones’s action scene guru Miguel Sapochnik, will be 80 minutes long. So expect the unexpected and brace yourself for some more killer battle scenes.

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 4 premieres Sunday, May 5, 2019 on HBO.
