Who Is Ana de Armas? Meet the New Bond Girl

There might be a new Bond girl in town: Ana de Armas.

Despite what Daniel Craig once said about being done with playing James Bond, the actor/liar will return in the as-of-yet untitled Bond film—currently known as “Bond 25″—which is set to premiere April 8, 2020. During a live casting announcement this morning, Craig’s fellow cast was revealed, including Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek, who will play the film’s villain, and Cuban-Spanish actor Ana de Armas, who will play an as-of-yet unnamed character.

Previous Bond girl Léa Seydoux will reprise her role as Madeleine Swann in this film, but we certainly wouldn’t put it past director Cary Joji Fukunaga to introduce de Armas as a new love interest for Bond, considering that getting a new love interest every film is sort of a Bond tradition. (BTW, the film is being referred to as “Bond 25” because it is the 25th James Bond film. Think about that next time you’re complaining about the number of Spider-Man films!) This will likely be de Armas’s biggest role to date, so let’s get to know the actor a little better.

Who is Ana de Armas?

The 30-year-old Cuban-Spanish actress is best known for her role in Blade Runner 2049, where she played Joi, a holographic companion and love interest to Ryan Gosling’s character, K—considered by many to be a breakout performance of the film. Beyond that she has had roles in 2016’s Hands of Stone with Robert De Niro, 2016’s War Dogs with Miles Teller, and 2015’s Knock Knock, an odd film where her character had a threesome with Keanu Reeves and Lorenza Izzo. (She then reunited with Reeves in 2016’s Exposed.) Coming up she’ll also star alongside Helen Hunt and John Leguizamo in The Night Clerk, an upcoming crime drama about a hotel front desk attendant.

De Armas was born and raised in Cuba. She is also a Spanish citizen, as her mother is of Spanish descent, and began acting in Spain at the age of 18. In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles and began her Hollywood film career.

The actor is also pretty active on Instagram and was apparently recently in Paris, if you want to check that out.

Who is Ana de Armas in Bond 25?

We do not have a character name or description yet for Ana de Armas’s character, but we assume her character will be a fairly big one, given that the actor joined director Cary Joji Fukunaga and cast members Seydoux, Craig, Naomie Harris and Lashana Lynch at the live casting announcement on Thursday in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Who else is in the Bond 25 cast?

Beyond Craig, obviously, the returning cast includes Ralph Fiennes as M, Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, Seydoux as Dr. Madeleine Swann, Rory Kinnear as Tanner, and Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter. New cast members include Malek as the villain and Billy Magnussen, David Denick, and Lashana Lynch in unconfirmed roles.

What will Bond 25 be about?

The film will follow Bond after he’s left MI6 and is enjoying retirement in Jamaica. Of course, that doesn’t last long: The CIA needs Bond’s help to rescue a scientist who’s been kidnapped, leading Bond to a new villain who’s been “armed with dangerous new technology,” according to a press release shared on Thursday. We also learned on Thursday that Killing Eve writer and Fleabag creator/star Phoebe Waller-Bridge will serve as one of the film’s screenwriters.
