Listen up, friends, because it is our favorite day of the week once again. Woman Crush Wednesday is upon us and we’ve got a real treat for you. This week we’re honoring comedy’s newest shining star, Lolly Adefope.
WHO’S THAT GAL: Lolly Adefope
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: We’re about four months into 2019 and it’s safe to say this year has been off to a great start. So great because it finally put Adefope on our radar, just when we thought the world of comedy couldn’t get any better!
Adefope plays recurring roles in two of the super fun new comedies, Shrill and Miracle Workers. And while both have such star-studded casts (Aidy Bryant, Steve Buscemi, and Daniel Radcliffe, oh my!) we can’t help but have this lovely lady on our mind. This British beauty does not just make us laugh our asses off, but she makes us wish she were our bestie. In both shows, Adefope has no problem being blunt as heck and telling it exactly like it is. In Shrill, Adefope’s character Fran isn’t afraid of calling out Annie (Bryant) when she’s being a bit selfish. And in Miracle Workers, her character Rosie sees God (Buscemi) as the lazy bum he really is. She rocks our worlds with her undeniable confidence and fierceness all while throwing out some of the best one-liners like it’s what she was born to do.
Adefope doesn’t play your typical black female character by any means. There aren’t any “Yass, queens!” sprinkled into her vocabulary, just some cold hard truths that we can get behind. She’s real. And she’s taking comedy to the next level. Adefope is living proof that women of color are a million times more entertaining when they play actual human beings (or angels) instead of overdone stereotypes.
Give her a few more roles and there’s no doubt in our mind that Lolly Adefope is going to be a household name.
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Chances are you’ve probably seen her before and didn’t even realize it. In addition to her rockin’ roles in Shrill and Miracle Workers, Adefope has also made appearances in the UK comedies Sick Note and This Time with Alan Partridge. In the last year, she even made cameos in The Spy Who Dumped Me and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Adefope is currently working on Ghosts, a new BBC One sitcom about—you guessed it— ghosts! Our gal is also working on Lugar, a short film about an elderly man’s two feuding caretakers.
