Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman’ on Hulu, Utterly Derivative Serial Killer Schlock
Just a few weeks after Netflix snapped up Zac Efron‘s Ted Bundy movie Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile at Sundance, the streaming giant has released an official trailer for the drama. Joe Berlinger’s film gives viewers an inside-look at serial killer Ted Bundy (Efron) and those closest to him, particularly his girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer, played by Lily Collins. The Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile trailer suggests that those who know the story of Ted Bundy should leave their expectations at the door, as Netflix is about to send viewers on a wild ride filled with deception, courtroom drama, and unimaginable violence.
According to Netflix, Zac Efron’s Extremely Wicked will “chronicle of the crimes of Ted Bundy from the perspective of Liz, his longtime girlfriend, who refused to believe the truth about him for years.” Unlike Netflix’s other Ted Bundy title, Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, the dramatized film will focus more on the notorious serial killer’s personal relationships than his crimes. “For years, I’ve carried this guilt that I’m to blame for everything,” says Collins’ Liz Kloepfer. “If only I hadn’t trusted you.”
The Extremely Wicked trailer intercuts the early days of their courtship — “Promise you’ll never leave me, Liz,” says Ted — with the reality of his murder trial. “Ted, did you do it?” she asks him through the prison’s glass. “No,” he says. As Liz slowly realizes what Ted is truly capable of, she begins to question everything she knows about her boyfriend and their years-long relationship. “Did you do these things, Ted,” Liz asks again. “This is all gonna end,” he says. “It’s only going to end with the truth,” she replies.
In addition to Efron and Collins, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile stars Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, Jim Parsons, and John Malkovich, who plays the judge in Ted Bundy’s murder trial.
If this teaser has you itching for more, you’re in luck: Netflix has set the Extremely Wicked release date for Friday, May 3.
