Jason Priestley Mourns His ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ Co-Star Luke Perry: “Goodnight Sweet Prince”

Beverly Hills, 90210 star Jason Priestley is mourning the loss of his friend and co-star Luke Perry. Early Thursday, Priestley posted a touching Instagram tribute to Perry, who passed away on Monday after suffering a stroke last week. Priestley’s tribute features two photos of he and Perry, a throwback to their glory days as 90210‘s resident heartthrobs and a more recent picture of them in a similar pose, and makes it clear that the actor is “in so much pain” in the wake of Perry’s death. “You burned oh, so brightly Luke,” writes Priestley.

“It’s taken me a couple of days to figure out how to write this,” begins Priestley, who played Brendan Walsh on the teen soap for 10 seasons. “My dear friend of 29 years, Luke Perry, was one of those truly special people who really cared… Luke was not only a star, he was an incredibly bright light that was extinguished far too soon… and that is why I, and so many others, are in so much pain today.”

Priestley went on to say that he understands why so many Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale fans are upset by Perry’s death. “If you had the good fortune to know Luke, or to have ever crossed his path, I know you are sad today as well,” he wrote. “The candle that burns twice as bright only burns for half as long… you burned oh, so brightly Luke… Goodnight Sweet Prince.”

Perry suffered what TMZ described as a “massive stroke” on Wednesday, February 27 and was rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital. He underwent treatment for five days before succumbing to his injuries on Monday morning. According to his publicist, his “close family and friends” were with Perry at the time of his passing. “The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning,” an official statement said.
