Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ First Trailer Dropped During The Oscars: Watch Here

Our very first “look” at Martin Scorsese’s long-awaited new film, The Irishman, premiered during the 2019 Oscars. The trailer was pretty coy about the look of the film, but it gave us a sense of the feel, with haunting voice-over dialogue. The trailer also confirmed that the film will be not just in theaters this fall, but also on Netflix. Martin Scorsese posted the clip on his own Instagram.

The Irishman is a lavish gangster film starring Al Pacino (as the infamous teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa), Robert DeNiro (as Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran), Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, and Bobby Cannavale. Pacino will actually be playing Hoffa at a bunch of different ages, and Scorsese is using state-of-the-art CGI techniques to pull this off. Last summer, Pacino told Bill Simmons about the process, noting, “It just seems like I’m not doing anything, but there were things we did, we had to wear certain things, they tape things on us. We went into a studio here and these guys are geniuses that do this stuff. They put us in these rooms with all these lights and told us to just animate and speak, because they recorded it on a computer for hours and then they put it together. It’s been tried before and it’s been done before well, but I think this may be another step.”

The Irishman has already been making other kinds of headlines. Netflix paid over $100 million for the project, which many thought would never see the light of day. The film is written by Oscar-winner Steve Zaillian and is based on the nonfiction book I Heard You Paint Houses. According to that text, Sheeran claimed on his deathbed to have murdered Hoffa. The film is rumored to be extremely long, and dropping this teaser suggests that Netflix has high hopes for its Oscar chances next year.

It’s already been a good Oscars for Netflix, with Roma taking home a few honors, and Period. End of Sentence winning Best Documentary Short.
