New Movies on Demand: ‘Green Book,’ ‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘Mortal Engines,’ and More

Oh watch out y’all, because the time is almost right for the Oscars! It’s the weekend all movie lovers wait for all year long, when songs are sung, montages are played, and awards are handed out on television and not during commercial breaks. This year’s awards season has been filled with fiasco after fiasco as the Academy Awards try to figure out who they are, but you don’t need to think about all that while you stream all the nominated movies–many of which are now available to watch at home! Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu or your cable’s on demand service, there are a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover.

There are plenty of nominees now available to rent or buy this week. On the purchase side, you can now buy Border (Best Makeup and Hairstyling) and Mary Queen of Scots (Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design). If you’re looking for a cheaper way to catch up, you can now rent Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay). And if you want to watch something that was nominated for zero Oscars but has way more steampunk fantasy than every nominated movie combined, you can now buy the Peter Jackson-produced Mortal Engines.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of Oscar-nominated dramas, action films, and lighthearted comedies now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

Green Book

This period piece film about a jazz pianist’s fraught tour through the Jim Crow south won big at the Golden Globes and has been nominated for 5 Oscars. Let’s count’em off! It’s nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor (Viggo Mortensen), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. If you want to watch the film so you can make accurate Oscar predictions, you’ll have to buy it right now; the film won’t be available to rent until March 12.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

If your brain’s all tuckered out from watching all that serious and/or emotional Oscar fare, might I suggest cooling off with a truly groovy movie? You can rent Mike Myers’ cheeky comedy classic Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery for just under a dollar in iTunes. Sounds like a totally shagadelic deal, baby, yeah! And just to stay on theme, this gem of a film was totally shut out at the 70th Academy Awards, probably because Titanic and Good Will Hunting and L.A. Confidential and As Good as It Gets and Boogie Nights all came out the same year and they just had to be nominated. That’s definitely why.
