Amidst Border Wall Emergency ‘The Late Show’ Goes With Jeff Goldblum Being Jeff Goldblum

While late night talk shows such as Real Time With Bill Maher focused on President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to build his border wall this week, Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show decided to go in a different direction. On Friday night, Colbert welcomed actor/comedian Jeff Goldblum on the show to simply do what he does best: being Jeff Goldblum.

The late night host introduced Goldblum as an “icon of American cinema,” “a grandmaster of late-night,” and “a singular character,” before the actor (and budding jazz musician) took the stage. Goldblum, who had campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Ohio, last appeared on the show its November 8, 2016 election special which he says was “devastating.”

When asked how that experience was for him, Goldblum replied “Oh, horrible, horrible, horrible—devastating,” before launching into a verbatim quote from George Bernard Shaw which he claims gave him strength to accept what had occur and carry on. You can watch him recite the lengthy quote in the clip above at the 3:00 mark. The two did not, however, speak about Trump’s border wall emergency.

It also didn’t appear that Goldblum was on The Late Show to promote anything in particular, except for maybe his recent piano jazz album, but Colbert seemed to simply marvel at the fact that Goldblum is best at being himself. “I don’t know of anyone who could possibly enjoy being Jeff Goldblum as much as you,” said Colbert.

“Yeah, I like it fine,” Goldblum replied.

The two then began talking about who would be the best actor to play Jeff Goldblum in his inevitable biopic which was followed by a discussion on jazz, sparking an impromptu duet with bandleader Jon Batiste.

Check out the full clip of Goldblum’s appearance above and be sure to tune in to CBS to catch The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on weeknights at 11:35PM EST.
