Spoilers for the final episodes of Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt past this point.

All good things must come to an end, and that includes Netflix’s superlative sitcom Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. But in the process of saying goodbye to the beloved Ellie Kemper starrer, we also got a little dig of the knife towards another Netflix property; albeit one that didn’t end of its own accord. That’s courtesy a dual reference to Netflix’s Marvel superhero shows, one explicit, one a little more subtle.

In the first episode of Season 4b, “Kimmy Fights a Fire Monster,” Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess) is reveling in a new level of fame, thanks to a “big” Hollywood role. That would be a quick cameo as Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) doorman on Daredevil, a role that he completely messes up — but still, in true Titus fashion, compels him to view the world as if it was totally focused on him.

There are two problems here, of course. The first is that Murdock lives in what is most likely a doorman-less building on Daredevil. He’s got a nice sized apartment, and we’ve never seen the lobby, but frankly it’s not the sort of building that would have a doorman.

The second problem is that Daredevil was canceled after Season 3, meaning the “as yet unaired episode” of Daredevil Titus “appears” in will never air. For any Marvel fan watching this episode of Kimmy Schmidt, that’s a bit uncomfortable to contemplate.

Oh, and there’s one more bit of weirdness with the Marvel of it all… The episode guest stars Jon Bernthal as a man who initially seems to be interested in Titus, but later turns out to be a private investigator tasked with digging up dirt on him. The only problem: there’s nothing so pathetic or incriminating out there that isn’t worse than Titus’s current life. So he gives up.

Bernthal, in case you don’t know, plays Frank Castle/The Punisher on both Daredevil, and the spin-off series The Punisher which debuted last week (January 18)

Look, don’t get me wrong… The episode is a funny return to form for Kimmy Schmidt, and the Titus storyline is typically delightful. But as a fan of the Marvel shows still sad about their untimely cancellation (and waiting for the axe to fall on The Punisher, potentially), this was a hard half hour to process.

Heck, maybe given this setup both Daredevil and The Punisher can return in the rumored Kimmy Schmidt movie? Superheroes do have a way of coming back from the dead…
