Sandra Oh’s Heartwarming Win Proves the Globes Get It

Name one person who had a better night at the Golden Globes than Sandra Oh? From hosting the show along with Andy Samberg to her big win in the Best Actress – Drama category for playing Eve Polastri in Killing Eve, Oh provided for some of the funniest, most emotional, and most rousing moments of the night.

Oh’s Best Actress – Drama win is only the second time a woman of Asian descent has won in that category. When she stepped out to accept her award, she immediately spotted her parents standing and cheering for her in the audience and broke into tears.

It was Oh’s second Golden Globe victory, after having won for her role as Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy way back in 2006. This puts the Globes way up on the Emmys, which nominated Oh but didn’t give her the win. When it comes to Sandra Oh, it appears that the Globes just get it.

Twitter would seem to agree, as Oh’s win was greeted by some of the most celebratory reactions of the night:

Oh began the evening by closing her and Samberg’s monologue with a poignant moment that nodded towards her being present for a “moment of change” in the industry. The Canadian Oh was joined on the Globes ballot by the Best Picture-nominated Crazy Rich Asians and Best Actress nominated Constance Wu. Darren Criss took time in his acceptance speech for The Assassination of Gianni Versace to shout out his Filipino mother. It added up to an all-too-rare moment of visibility for actors and actresses of Asian descent.

“I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight because I wanted to be here to look out onto this audience and witness this moment of change. And I’m not fooling myself. I’m not fooling myself. Next year could be different. It probably will be. But right now, this moment is real.”
