When Will ‘Annihilation’ Be on Netflix US? Not Today, but It Is on Hulu and Amazon Prime

One of the best films of 2018 has finally made it onto a streaming service, only it’s not the one we all initially expected. Annihilation, Alex Garland’s deeply disturbing film full of creepy bears, eel tummies, and literal flower people, just landed on Hulu and Prime Video. Now the only reason why that’s such a surprise is because Annihilation is technically a Netflix film, insomuch that it’s considered a “Netflix Original” outside the United States. In fact, if you live outside the States, you have probably been able to stream it on your Netflix account for months now.

Nevertheless, Americans can now stream Annihilation on Hulu or Amazon’s Prime Video, and the film is truly a must-see. Based on the first installment of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, Annihilation is the harrowing story of Lena (Natalie Portman), a former soldier-turned-cellular biologist who is enlisted to join a super strange expedition into “the Shimmer.” What Lena doesn’t tell the other soldiers and scientists on the mission is that she’s there to find out what happened to her elite soldier husband’s unit. Once inside “the Shimmer,” the team, including characters played by Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, and Holly Hunter, must face their worst fears and confront an ever-warping reality.

Annihilation is an unsettling and beautiful film about how tenuous our relationships with reality are, and about how easy it is to unravel. Portman gives a spectacular performance and Garland re-asserts himself as a key voice in the science-fiction genre. Check it out pronto.
