Look, we can talk all we want about the spirit of generosity and how it’s better to give than to receive and how Starbucks’ holiday flavors are the true reason for the season, but I think we’re all adult enough to admit that the best part of Christmas is the presents. It’s about what we receive. Selfish? Maybe! But it’s not just about wrapped presents under the tree. It’s also about what we’re getting from out entertainment platforms. And Netflix showed up to Christmas 2018 with a sleigh full of new holiday-themed movies to add to their collection.
All of Netflix’s Christmas-movie offerings nestle comfortably into the Christmas-movie niche. There is no need to engage in a weeks-long debate over whether any of these are Die Hard-esque Christmas technicalities. These are Christmas movies, though and through. Each one of them added to the Netflix family. We’ve been talking a lot about the 21st century Christmas canon here on Decider. Now it looks like Netflix is establishing a Christmas canon of its own. Here are the six members for 2018.
'The Christmas Chronicles'
Kurt Russell plays a gloriously bearded Santa Claus, whose sleigh gets downed after he’s spotted by two siblings (Judah Lewis and Darby Camp). The movie’s a lot of fun, with a surprise Mrs. Claus appearance, a jailhouse musical number, and all the fun of a bang-able Santa. Just no Rudolph. For contractual reasons.
'A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding'
A year after the first A Christmas Prince stole Netflix subscribers’ hearts — and made them watch it over and over and over again until Netflix’s own social media accounts made fun of them — they’re back with another fairy-tale installment. And this time, since royal weddings are so hot right now, we’re getting one of those too.
'The Princess Switch'
Vanessa Hudgens pulls double-duty in this new holiday romantic comedy, playing a single American baker who enters a competition in Belgravia. There, she meets a young woman who looks exactly like her who’s engaged to a prince. Some grown-up Parent Trap shenanigans later and they’ve switches lives … and maybe loves. Come for the classic rom-com trappings we’ve come to love. Stay for the meta-Netflix moments.
'Christmas With a View'
Vivica A. Fox and Dallas star Patrick Duffy co-star in this Christmas movie about an aspiring restauranteur who meets a famous chef when he comes to work at her hotel. Romantic entanglements ensue, with stars Kaitlyn Leeb and Scott Cavalheiro doing their best to sex up your holiday.
'The Holiday Calendar'
Kat Graham stars as a photographer struggling to make it happen, who comes into possession of a magical Advent calendar that might just have the power to show the future. We LOVE a little magic in our Christmas movies, so this movies does the trick and then some. It also co-stars This Is Us great Ron Cephas Jones.
'5-Star Christmas'
How about a little Christmas farce? In this Italian Christmas movie, the Italian premiere and his attractive female companion have an encounter interrupted by the presence of a dead man in a Santa suit, and they have to scramble in order to avoid scandal. We could all use a little manic sex-comedy this winter, right?
