Netflix adds so much new content at the top of every month that it is impossible to watch it all or even know what is and isn’t new. Take for instance the Epix comedy/drama series Get Shorty, which had its first season added to Netflix back on November 1. Depending on how your algorithm works, you may not have noticed that the premium cable show is now on Netflix. What is Get Shorty on Netflix?
Get Shorty is a dramedy currently airing on Epix based on the 1990 Elmore Leonard novel of the same name. It premiered back in August of 2017, and just wrapped up its second season in October 2018. Right now, only Season 1 is available on Netflix. The show comes from Shameless executive producer Davey Holmes. Fun fact: Holmes played keyboards on the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ debut album!
The show’s cast is lead by Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd, Bridesmaids) and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond, The Big Sick). O’Dowd plays Miles Daly, a former criminal enforcer who decides to switch up his career and get into entertainment. His mission: launder money through producing a movie. His big problem: his criminal past follows him to Los Angeles. Romano plays Rick Moreweather, a has-been producer known for churning out low-budget fare that gets caught up in Miles’ scheme.
Does Get Shorty have anything to do with the movie?
No! Well, it does share a title and source material, but that’s about it. Leonard’s novel was first adapted into a 1995 hit film also titled Get Shorty that starred John Travolta as a loan shark and Gene Hackman as a B-movie producer (Rene Russo and Danny DeVito also starred). The film hewed closer to the source material and all the characters even had the same names as in the book. The film was a hit with critics and audiences, and even earned a few Golden Globe nominations.
Can you stream Get Shorty (the movie) on Netflix?
You cannot! Netflix only has the TV show, which is fine since it stands separate from the feature film. You can, however, stream the 1995 film adaptation of Get Shorty on Hulu and Prime Video. So, yeah, you’ll have to get one of those services if you want to Get Shorty.
When will Get Shorty Season 2 arrive on Netflix?
It’s tough to know, but if I had to guess (and that’s what this section of the article is all about!), I’d guess it’ll be added November 1, 2019. Both seasons of Get Shorty aired from August to October, and Season 1 wasn’t added until right now. So if Epix’s deal with Netflix requires that long of a delay, then it won’t show up until next year.
