Watch ‘The Walking Dead’ Cast Say a Heartfelt Goodbye to Andrew Lincoln

On Sunday (November 4), you won’t have Rick Grimes to kick around anymore. Andrew Lincoln’s character, a former sheriff who wakes up in the middle of the zombie apocalypse after a month long coma has been the central figure on The Walking Dead, kicking off the action of the show and holding it steady as things got (predictably) rough. And with Lincoln leaving after eight seasons (and change), both current and former cast members got together (virtually) to tape a video explaining why Lincoln has been the goopy glue that held Walking Dead together behind the scenes, as well as in front of the camera.

The most emotionally charged confessional is saved for the front of the video (as well as a little later in), as the late Scott Wilson talks about having the chance to work with Lincoln again… Not knowing this would be his last go around in front of the camera, as the actor passed away suddenly on October 6.

“Andrew Lincoln, I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Lincoln once more, so that was a great day for me,” Wilson noted.

Other old faces show up, including what looks like an archived shoot with former cast-member Sonequa Martin-Green from the show’s prison-set days, a hilariously mustachioed return from Michael Cudlitz, and Steven Yuen, who is lost for words.

“I keep wracking my brain to figure out something to say, and every single thing fails that,” Yeun says. “So all I want to say is, Andy, I love you.”

There’s much more in the video, including words from Norman Reedus about Lincoln being his best friend, and notes from cast-members new and old about how welcoming and giving he was an actor. It’s clear that Lincoln’s presence on the set was as much more than playing a part: it was the father of an extended family.

Speaking of which, Lincoln is leaving the show not because of any acrimony, but because after nine years with his makeshift cast family, he’s headed back to England to spend more time with his biological one. Whatever that means for Walking Dead going forward is a huge question mark; but either way, it’s clear there will be a Rick Grimes shaped hole on screen, and an even larger, Andrew Lincoln sized hole behind the scenes.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC.
