All Six Seasons of ‘St. Elsewhere’ Are Now on Hulu

Halloween isn’t all about tricks. Today, Hulu added the seminal hospital drama St. Elsewhere to its service, which means that all six seasons are now available to stream. Season 1 has been hanging around Hulu for a few months, but now that the entire series is available to stream, it’s time for a re-watch (or for a first-watch). Turn off those Grey’s Anatomy reruns and get to streaming!

St. Elsewhere, which ran from 1982 to 1988 on NBC, followed a group of residents at St. Eligius hospital, an underfunded teaching hospital in Boston’s South End. Leading the ridiculously large ensemble cast — Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone says that the show featured 16 series regulars by the end of Season 1 — were Ed Flanders, Norman Lloyd, and William Daniels, three established stars who played surgeons tasked with teaching a crew of young doctors. Denzel Washington, Holly Hunter, David Morse, Howie Mandel, and more stars spent their early days on the St. Elsewhere set, and the gig ultimately launched many of its young actors onto bigger and better things.

But St. Elsewhere isn’t just your average hospital drama. As Sepinwall explains, the show’s diverse cast, timely plot lines, and commitment to experimentation (read: doing weird shit with tone, genre, and timelines) make St. Elsewhere far ahead of its time. Don’t expect any clunky plots about Reagan-era politics; in St. Elsewhere, you’ll find only nuance — and a series finale that rivals Lost in its meta-ness.

Don’t let the finale-haters sway you: St. Elsewhere is one hundred percent worth your time. Make sure to add this one to your queue ASAP.
