Another Marvel Show Bites The Dust: Netflix Cancels ‘Luke Cage’ After 2 Seasons

In a shocking new development, Netflix has officially cancelled its original series Marvel’s Luke Cage after just two seasons. The streaming giant also cancelled Marvel’s Iron First just one week ago, and the third season of its first Marvel enterprise, Daredevil, just premiered yesterday on the platform.

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season,” Marvel and the streaming service said on Friday. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

Nobody expected Luke Cage to get cancelled, including showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker and lead actor Mike Colter, who remained under contract according to Deadline. Despite the fact that scripts have been developed for a potential 10-episode third season, discussions did not prove fruitful, particularly over the last 48 hours.

According to sources close to the negotiating table, the series was scrapped due to “creative differences.” Ultimately writers and execs did not see eye to eye regarding more “developed” content, demands for more creative power and a reduction of episodes from 13 down to 10.

Currently there are no plans for owner Marvel to shop Luke Cage to other platforms, including the upcoming Disney streaming service, but you never know. With the cancellation of Luke Cage and Iron Fist, Netflix seems to be heading towards possibly parting ways with the Marvel enterprise. Only Daredevil, Jessica Jones and The Punisher remain strong (for the time being) with confirmed third seasons.
