It is a blessed day for one and all. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! is finally available on SVOD. So you can buy or rent the magical tale of free-wheeling love set to the infectious music of ABBA.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! is a half-sequel, half-prequel to the original Mamma Mia! As a pregnant Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) prepares to finally open Donna’s dream hotel on the island, she is beset by memories of her mother, who died offscreen. While Sophie struggles to nail the opening, we watch as a young Donna (Lily James) graduates Oxford and embarks on a cross-continental trip that will change her life forever. In Paris, she falls into bed with Harry, and then in Greece, she falls madly in love with Sam. After he leaves her heartbroken, she hooks up with the dashing Bill. At the end of the summer, Donna discovers she is pregnant with Sophie. (Note: none of this is a spoiler since it is the background to the entire plot of the first Mamma Mia!)
Like the first Mamma Mia!, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! makes little to no narrative sense. It is a rushed fever dream of horniness played out under a blistering Grecian sun. It is also one of the happiest films you’ll ever watch. You’ll get swept away by the incandescently upbeat dance numbers and swoon when Cher arrives to bleat “Fernando.” (I actually broke out into applause when it happened in the theater.)
