‘Riverdale’ Casts Gina Gershon as Jughead’s Mom, Trinity Likins as His Sister

Looks like Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) family is finally coming to town: as just revealed at Riverdale‘s New York Comic Con panel, Gina Gershon will be joining the cast as his mother, Gladys; and relative newcomer Trinity Likins will play Jughead’s oft-mentioned sister Jellybean.

For most of the run of the show, Jughead has either been on his own, or bunking with his ex-con, occasionally drunk dad FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich). FP has gone through hell and back as leader of the motorcycle gang the Southside Serpents, eventually getting clean and handing the gang over to Jughead at the end of Season 2. But one thing that’s been sorely missing from the moody, novel-writing teen’s life has been the rest of his family.

Now, they’ll be moving from Toledo back to the Town With Pep as of the Wednesday, December 12 episode. As usual with TV’s most insane drama, expect that the arrival of the other half of the Joneses will leave the rest of the town trying to keep up.

Jellybean, now going by “JB,” is “wise beyond her years,” according to the character description provided to Decider. “Her favorite bands are Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. Jellybean lives with her biker mom in Toledo where they run scams to make ends meet. And like mother like daughter: Jellybean… is quite the little con artist herself.”

Her Mom isn’t much better: “a ‘businesswoman’ who runs the salvage yard (chop shop) that doubles as a Serpent compound, and the Serpents all snap to attention when she gives them an order. A Serpent with a GED, she acts as Fagin to a crew of teenaged car parts thieves.”

First of all, props to The CW press department for dropping an Oliver Twist ref casually in a press release.

Second, FP has really tried to go straight in the past year. He’s cleaned up his act, and aimed to patch things up with the true love of his life, Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick). Jughead has also tried to steer the sometimes rambunctious Serpents towards a M.O. closer to Hell’s Angels than the less than savory view the rest of Riverdale has traditionally held of the gang.

Based on what we now know about JB and Gladys, seems like their arrival will knock the Jones men, and their life plans, for a serious loop.

Fans will know Gershon’s work from Bound, as well as on TV in Rescue Me and Curb Your Enthusiasm. She also appeared opposite Ulrich in the 1997 Paul Schrader comedy Touch. Fun fact!

Likins is a relative newcomer, having only previously appeared on an Hallmark Holiday movie (Christmas in the Air), and in the CBC miniseries Unspeakable. She has never appeared opposite Ulrich in anything.

Riverdale returns to The CW on Wednesday, October 10 at 8/7c.
