‘Mayans MC’s Premiere Had Two Big ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Easter Eggs

You may be able to take the show out of Charming, but you can’t take Charming out of the show. Last night marked the first episode of the latest chapter in Sons of Anarchy‘s brutal universe, Mayans MC. And while Mayans is certainly strong enough to stand without its SAMCRO brothers, the show’s first episode wasn’t afraid to wink at its past. Mild “Perro/Oc” spoilers ahead.

The first major Sons of Anarchy Easter egg came during one of the shocking revelations in “Perro/Oc.” While EZ (JD Pardo) is on a mission for the Mayans, he shares a moment with a blonde woman across the street. But that isn’t just any young socialite; that’s Emily (Sarah Bolger), EZ’s beloved ex-girlfriend. During a flashback we learn a little more about what tore them apart.

While EZ was in prison for killing a cop, he refused to see Emily for a long time. EZ was looking at 20 years in prison so he decided it was better for both of them if he broke things off. Emily was justifiably furious at that decision, especially because she had a secret of her own and a very good reason for wanting to talk to EZ: she was pregnant with his baby. As she storms away and the guards restrain a screaming EZ, the camera pans to another woman in the prison waiting room — Sons of Anarchy‘s Gemma (Katey Sagal).

Based on the timing of the flashback, it’s likely that Gemma was likely hanging around to see her husband and the president of SAMCRO Clay (Ron Perlman) or her son Jax (Charlie Hunnam). SAMCRO’s ruling matriarch coldly stares down EZ before calling he and Emily “Assholes.” It’s a perfect Gemma moment.

But this premiere’s second cameo is more interesting because it doesn’t happen during a flashback. Most of Mayans‘ first episode revolves around trying to track down the bikers who stole the drug shipment the Mayans were moving for the Galindo cartel. After a lot of riding around and intense speeches, they finally realize the culprit is a rival club, the Samoans.

Mayans’ president Bishop (Michael Irby) decides their best move is to storm the Samoans’ headquarters. Incidentally the Samoans headquarters is in a cemetery because Mayans MC does not care about practicality but it does care about sweet set pieces. For this attack to go well, the Mayans recruit some extra backup from their SAMCRO allies. That’s when the camera reveals —

Les Packer! The President of the San Bernardino chapter of SAMCRO! Les (Robert Patrick) didn’t appear in Sons of Anarchy often. He mostly helped Jax sort through club policies, bylaws, and the club’s voting system in Season 6 and 7. But his albeit brief appearance in this first episode indicates that we may not be done with SAMCRO just yet.

New episodes of Mayans MC premiere on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
