New Movies On Demand: ‘Superfly,’ ‘Book Club,’ ‘Tag,’ And More

Hallelujah, the weekend is here! Everyone knows the best days of the week start with an “S,” and you know that means it’s time for you to stream something special. You’ve got the hours and the days, especially with this being a holiday weekend! Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu, or your cable’s on demand service, there are always a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover!

If you’re looking for something fun to stream, you’ll be stoked to learn that two of summer comedies–Tag and Book Club–are now rentable on VOD! Tag stars a group of dudes that have been playing a kid’s game for decades, and Book Club focuses on a group of ladies whose passions are reignited after they read Fifty Shades of Grey. Watch these two back to back and you’ll see star after star, like Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner and Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton. So many laughs for a fraction of the purchase price!

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of sexy thrillers, gritty action movies, and fun comedies now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

SuperFly

The classic 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly got a modern makeover this year, as Trevor Jackson slipped into the stylish shoes of drug dealer Youngblood Priest. The update shifts the scene from Harlem to Atlanta, but keeps Youngblood’s goal familiar: he wants to get out of the drug game and go straight–but he has to pull off one last deal first. The film also stars Straight Outta Compton’s Jason Mitchell as Priest’s best bud and The Wire’s Michael K. Williams as the smooth operator’s mentor. If you want to watch the movie now, though, you’ll have to pay full price. SuperFly won’t be available to rent until September 11.

Support the Girls

Flying under the radar this week is a new comedy starring Regina Hall and Haley Lu Richardson that Decider’s Joe Reid heartily recommends:

This is a slice of life that speaks to so much of what life is like today, trying to toe that fine line between staying off of the chopping block while still trying to do good for yourself and other people. The women in this story are aggressed in ways big and small, and [director Andrew] Bujalski is also careful to pinpoint how it’s not the same for every one of them. But there’s a real bond between characters there — dedicated Lisa, cheerful Maci, unvarnished Danyelle — and that really bonds the audience to them as well.

The Odd Couple

I know I picked The Odd Couple as the $0.99 rental last week, but I’m breaking the rules and picking it again to honor the legendary playwright Neil Simon. With the 1968 blockbuster comedy, Simon brought his smash hit stage play to the big screen, bringing Broadway actor Walter Matthau with him and pairing him up with the perfectly fussy Jack Lemmon. This wasn’t Simon’s first screenplay, however, as he brought his other hit play Barefoot in the Park to the big screen a year earlier (and you can stream it on STARZ or rent in iTunes for $3.99). But The Odd Couple’s the one that really became a permanent part of the pop culture landscape, inspiring two TV shows and a sequel (at least, there’s a lot of Odd Couple stuff out there!). Revisit the movie that helped cement Neil Simon as a legend.
