The Great ’Mamma Mia!’ Mystery Solved: Who Is Sophie’s Dad?

All this week Decider is celebrating the most polarizing punctuation in pop culture: the exclamation point! More spirited than a period and more decisive than a question mark, the exclamation point is as divisive as it is volatile. Invigorating sentences with enthusiasm and gusto since the 15th century, this renegade maverick of grammatical anarchy has irrevocably disrupted the status quo of the punctuation game. Love it or hate it, Decider commemorates the imitable mischief-maker known as the exclamation point.

Of all the great unsolved mysteries, there is only one that really matters: Who is Sophie’s dad in the 2008 musical comedy Mamma Mia!?

Who cares about the true identity of Jack the Ripper? Or what happened to Amelia Earheart or D. B. Cooper? What we want to know is which hot guy sired Amanda Seyfried with Meryl Streep on a Greek Isle so many moons ago.

In case you’re rusty on your Mamma Mia!, the film opens on the idyllic Greek isle of Kalokairi. 20-year-old Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfried) sings to the moon of her own dream: she wants her father to give her away at her upcoming wedding. The one problem is she has no idea who her father is, and after snooping through her mother’s diary she knows there are three possibilities. There’s Harry (Colin Firth), Sam (Pierce Brosnan), and Bill (Stellan Skarsgard).

Instead of doing the rational thing — like asking her mother about this — Sophie sends wedding invitations to all three men and then tricks them into believing that her mother wanted all of her old flings at her daughter’s wedding for no reason. Naturally, hijinks ensue, all three guys realize they could be Sophie’s father, and Sophie can’t figure out definitively which one is.

So who is Sophie’s father? This is the question the entire film hinges upon, and yet neither the original film nor the effervescent sequel, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, give us a definitive answer. However, the first film offers a number of tantalizing clues, and with these narrative bread crumbs, we might find ourselves led to an actual answer.

The Case for Colin Firth, aka “Harry”

  • Harry and Sophie’s mom Donna had unprotected sex in the exact window Sophie was conceived.
  • Harry is an adorable lump of earnestness and Sophie is an adorable lump of earnestness.
  • Harry reveals that he is gay in Mamma Mia!, but that has no bearing on his fertility or ability to conceive a child biologically.
  • Harry is eager to be a dad, as evidenced by how excited he is when he believes that Sophie is his daughter, and how adamant he is to financially assist Donna.

The Case For Pierce Brosnan, aka “Sam”

  • Sam and Sophie’s mom Donna had unprotected sex in the exact window Sophie was conceived.
  • Sam has blue-ish eyes, and Sophie has blue eyes.
  • Sophie is a sort of talented artist and Sam is a successful architect. Both things take some measure of artistic talent.
  • Sam has other children, which suggests he is fertile and able to have children.
  • Sam is Donna’s true love. That doesn’t mean anything in biological terms, but it’s nice to know!

The Case for Stellan Skarsgard, aka “Bill”

  • Bill and Sophie’s mom Donna had unprotected sex in the exact window Sophie was conceived.
  • Bill has blonde hair and blue eyes, and Sophie has blonde hair and blue eyes.
  • In Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, it’s suggested that Bill comes from a big family, which might suggest fertility.
  • Sophie was named after a woman named Sophia, and Bill believes it was his great-aunt. This Sophia took care of Donna while she was pregnant.
  • When Sophie reveals that Sophia left money to Donna when she died, Bill said, “I always thought her money was left to family.”
  • Sophie and Bill come to a mutual understanding that Bill is likely her father. Later, Harry and Sam come to the same conclusion and Sophie lies to them about the conversation with Bill or the possibility that she is still unsure of who her father is.

So Who Is Sophie’s Father In Mamma Mia!?

Without a fictional in-universe DNA test or confirmation from the ABBA overlords, we have to look at the evidence and make this call on our own. Given what we know from the films, I have to surmise that Bill is most likely to be Sophie’s biological father. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t be Harry or Sam, but that there’s more evidence pointing to Bill and it’s the most compelling.

Another reason why I lean towards saying Bill is the father is that it makes the most narrative sense. When all three men return to the island, they are leaving behind lives that don’t completely satisfy them. For Harry, he is a gay punk stuck in a picture perfect upper class lifestyle. Coming to the island helps him feel some joy, and some connection to Donna and Sophie. For Sam, he’s still heartbroken over the fact that he left Donna behind. He’s divorced with two grown kids, and disillusioned from his life. He’s back on the island to win back Donna and take back happiness. And Bill? He’s living an itinerant lifestyle traveling the globe. He doesn’t have a connection to anything, nor has he really matured. Being Sophie’s biological father would force him to confront his own adulthood.

So if each father figure is there to play a role to play in Sophie and Donna’s lives, Harry is the nurturer, Sam is Donna’s parter, and Bill…is the sperm donor.

Does It Even Matter Who Sophie’s Dad Is?

*Long arduous sigh…*

There’s probably a good reason why Mamma Mia! has never definitely answered this question, and it’s that it doesn’t matter. Mamma Mia! is a movie about the joy of love and the wild bliss of community. It doesn’t matter who Sophie’s biological father is; what matters is that Harry, Sam, and Bill are all there for her now. Together they form a triumvirate of paternal love.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter, but I totally think it’s Bill.
