If you’re looking to escape the endless news cycle with some bizarre non-political news, actress Kathleen Turner has you covered. In a new interview with Vulture, Turner discussed her decades-long career, difficult co-stars, Hollywood’s ongoing issues with sexism, and… Donald Trump’s weird handshake. Turner told Vulture that she and Trump ran in the same circles in the 1980s — her peak as a young actress — and when they finally met at a party, Trump gave her the worst handshake imaginable.
In the ’80s, Turner broke out in a major way with hits like Body Heat, Romancing the Stone, Prizzi’s Honor, Peggy Sue Got Married, and others. As a result of her rising fame, Turner became a fixture at A-list parties, including the kind that a young (ish) Donald Trump would have attended. When asked if she ever bumped into Trump at one of these parties in New York, Turner told Vulture, “Yes. Yuck. He has this gross handshake.” Turner went on to explain why Trump’s handshake is so off-putting — and why she’s remembered it 30 years later. “He goes to shake your hand and with his index finger kind of rubs the inside of your wrist,” she said. “He’s trying to do some kind of seductive intimacy move. You pull your hand away and go yuck.”
Trump’s handshakes have become something of a *thing* since he was elected, but it’s been hard to put our, uh, finger on exactly what’s so weird about them. We’re still pretty unsettled, but thanks to Kathleen Turner, at least we can now articulate precisely why his handshakes are so “gross.”
