New Movies On Demand: ‘Pacific Rim Uprising,’ ‘Sherlock Gnomes,’ ‘The Death of Stalin’ And More

If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat, why not spend a few hours watching a rad movie? And you know what’s even better than spending those hours in an air conditioned movie theater? Spending a few hours in your air conditioned living room! Why go outside at all if you don’t have to? Whether you use Amazon Video, iTunes, Vudu, or your cable’s on demand service, there are always a lot of new releases out there waiting for you to discover!

New to VOD this weekend is the political satire The Death of Stalin, a fast-paced comedy set against the upheaval in the Soviet Union following the death of Joseph Stalin. The film, which comes from Veep mastermind Armando Iannucci, stars Steve Buscemi, Jason Isaacs, Michael Palin, Simon Russell Beale and more. While you’ll have to wait a few weeks to rent The Death of Stalin, you can rent another, completely different movie right now: Death Wish! Bruce Willis stars in the remake of this ’70s vengeance movie, one that was pretty controversial when the trailer dropped. What was the hubbub about? You can now find out for the low price of a rental.

What else can you buy or rent this week? Find out by taking a look at the collection of sci-fi actioners, family friendly adventures, and coming of age comedies now available for you to enjoy from the comfort of your very own home!

Pacific Rim Uprising

John Boyega stars in this follow-up to the 2013 franchise-starter, playing the son of Idris Elba’s character and a mighty fine Jaeger pilot himself. This film includes more of the giant monster fighting that made the first film such a hit. Are you in the mood for monster-on-robot carnage? Then this movie definitely delivers on that front. This is the perfect sci-fi slugfest for Saturday night. And if you want to hold off and rent the movie, mark June 19th on your calendars.

Sherlock Gnomes

I’m sorry. I know when you woke up this morning, you did not expect to see a garden gnome’s butt strapped into a mankini. I didn’t either. But that is, for some reason, the image Paramount wanted at the forefront of the Sherlock Gnomes marketing, so that’s where we are now. Also, I’m sorry to inform every parent out there that this movie is now available to purchase (and it’ll be rentable on 6/12). The sequel to 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet wasn’t any more critically received, but it does feature the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt. So… there’s that? Listen: this is family-friendly fun that the kids will dig and if it gets them into garden work, then it can’t be all bad!

The Final Year

If you don’t have access to HBO, you can still watch the new documentary about President Barack Obama’s final year in office for the low price of $0.99. Our own Joe Reid gave the film a “stream it” recommendation, especially since the film unflinchingly deals with the fallout of the 2016 election.

The accident of history makes The Final Year more profound than it set out to be, but at its core is a compelling story about the people in charge of taking America out into the world. It’s a good watch if you’re a political wonk, but even if you don’t follow foreign policy all that closely, it’s a good education.
