Hulu Viewers Are Binging Classic TGIF Shows At Mind-Blowing Speeds

TGIF. To ’90s kids, these four simple letters meant so much more than “Thank God it’s Friday.” TGIF was symbolic of a night of must-see television comedy. If you missed an episode of Boy Meets World, Family Matters, Full House, or Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, you could kiss any Monday morning chit-chat around the old middle school water fountain goodbye. There was no Netflix; there was no Hulu; there was only TGIF.

Oh, and Hey Dude and Salute Your Shorts, but that’s a story for another day.

Growing up, I was obsessed with TGIF, and evidently I wasn’t the only one. The intoxicating allure of nostalgia has led to Hulu viewers binging these classic shows at a breakneck pace. IndieWire reports that in 2017, the average Family Matters fan watched the entire series, all 215 episodes, within a single month.

Please applaud my restraint as I refrain from making the obvious “Did I do that?” joke. Not all heroes wear capes.

Related, Hulu viewers who streamed all 192 episodes of Full House did so, on average, over the course of just one month. What about Boy Meets World? I’m glad you asked. IndieWire reported that “60,000 subscribers have already watched all 60 hours (or 120 episodes)” of the TGIF classic. There are actually 158 episodes of the series streaming on Hulu (not 120), but however you break it down, that’s a lot of Cory and Shawn tomfoolery.

The binge watching appears to have more to do with nostalgia than a younger audience discovering these shows. The average Boy Meets World streamer on Hulu is 32-years-old, while the average Family Matters viewer is 34.

Another fun streaming fact from the report: In 2017, Hulu viewers watched more than 135 million hours of South Park and 105 million hours of Law & Order: SVU.

Not a great day to be a book.
