Miss America Is Getting Rid of Its Swimsuit Competition

And who said beauty pageants can’t change? The latest iteration of the Miss America competition will be more inclusive of women of all sizes and will no longer include the swimsuit competition, the organization announced on Tuesday. It only took until 2018!

Skimpy bikinis aren’t the only things on the chopping block. The evening gown portion of the competition is also being remodeled. Chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors Gretchen Carlson announced the changed during Good Morning America. “We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That’s huge,” she said. She also noted that the new Miss America will be a competition, not a pageant.

So what’s going in place of these events? Instead of a swimsuit competition, contestants will have to participate in an interactive session with judges. According to a statement from the Miss America Organization, each contestant “will highlight her achievements and goals in life and how she will use her talents, passion, and ambition to perform the job of Miss America.”

As for the evening gown portion, contestants will now be allowed to wear whatever they choose. The competition will also focus on their social-impact initiatives. The talent part of the competition is staying the same.

Carlson revealed that these changes were made partially because of the #MeToo movement. “We’re experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues,” she wrote in a statement. “Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement.”

This change comes after Miss America was involved in a sexual harassment scandal of its own. Last December it was revealed that several leaders and employees of the Miss America Organization had sent emails about contestants discussing their weight and sex lives. The then-leaders of the pageant resigned soon after the news broke. And now in the wake of that controversy, Miss America has decided to adopt a more inclusive, issues-focused, and less sexually changed direction. Interesting.

The new and improved Miss America Competition (not pageant) will take place on September 9, 2018.
