‘Superstore’ Creator Reveals Why They Didn’t Make Jonah The Father Of Amy’s Child

If you watched last week’s finale of NBC’s Superstore (SPOILER ALERT!) then you already know that fans finally got to see Jonah (Ben Feldman) and Amy (America Ferrera) get it on, while being livestreamed to every Cloud 9 store around the world (unbeknownst to them). During the episodes leading up to this event, the two coworkers had gotten quite close, spending a romantic night on the golf course and later kissing in the “photo lab.”

Fans had speculated that Amy’s surprise pregnancy would later be linked to Jonah, rather than her ex-husband Adam, but series creator Justin Spitzer has revealed why they didn’t decide to go that route.

“It’s funny, because there was one writer who specifically kept pitching that very thing,” Spitzer told TVLine. “At the time, I thought it’d be surprising, but given how many people predicted [the potential paternity twist], I guess [not].”

If you recall, the week after Amy and Jonah’s infamous kiss, the pair revealed to Adam (while under some awkward sexual tension) that they had never hooked up before, despite fan assumptions that there had been something going on between the two that we didn’t know about. But seriously, after all of this, what would be the fun in that?

While fans may be wondering how this is all going to play out when it comes to Jonah and Amy’s relationship, while she’s bearing her ex-husband’s child, having her Cloud 9 coworker be the father seems to be the least rewarding option.

Ultimately Spitzer claimed that the show would have done a disservice to fans by making Jonah the father since viewers have been anxiously awaiting (3 whole seasons) the outcome of this “will-they-won’t-they” storyline.

“I felt like it’d be robbing the audience of the joy of seeing them get together,” the EP added. “To just say, ‘This couple that you’ve been waiting to get together for so long had sex last month and we just didn’t show it’ [felt wrong].”
