The 11 Dirtiest and Most Shocking Sex Scenes in the History of Animation

When most people think of animation, they think of sweet, loving, silly things. After all Disney and cartoons defined most of our childhoods, and Pixar still has the ability to make middle-aged adults cry. However, because people are complicated and messed up, there’s a dark side of animation that is often ignored when it comes to overarching discussions about the medium. This article is about that side.

From crazy anime hookups with literal demons and food orgies to heartbreaking depictions of sexual assault and dwellings on loneliness, animation is filled with scenes that press the limits of what sex can mean. Some films are perverse to the point of being hilarious. Others use animated sexuality to explore and explain ideas in a manner that live-action could never capture. But no matter how much they may parallel your favorite Saturday morning cartoons, every movie and short on this list is uniquely remarkable. Below is a sampling of the animated projects that questioned what sex and intimacy can be in their own bizarre and sometimes beautiful way.

Robert Zemeckis‘ wacky crime-noir adventure doesn’t have the most graphic sexy scene on this list, but it is notable for being so sexually explicit while still being family friendly. The PG-rated movie follows Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins), a private detective who is recruited to exonerate the “Toon” Roger Rabbit. Most of the Oscar-winning film follows Eddie and Roger stumbling through cartoon antics, but Jessica Rabbit (voiced by the uncredited Kathleen Turner) stands as likely the best remembered character in this cult classic. From her first frame, Jessica Rabbit oozes sex, but there’s a legend that if viewers pause the movie during the cab crash scene, they can catch a glimpse of what’s underneath her dress. It’s a pretty filthy Easter Egg, especially for such a kid-friendly watch.

Holli Would using sex to turn into a human in ‘Cool World’

The great Ralph Bakshi‘s Cool World is very transparently an adult knock-off of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? The film features a similar world in which real people can interact with cartoon characters, only this time the cartoons come from the mind of a lone cartoonist. There’s really only one rule in Cool World — real people (“noids”) and cartoons (“doodles”) can’t have sex together. Guess which rule they break?

The scene is insane in and of itself, but what makes it even crazier is who it involves. Brad Pitt stars as Detective Frank Harris, who is dedicated to catching the doodle he will eventually sleep with, Kim Basinger‘s Holli Would. The sex is so magical, it actually transforms Holli into the real Basinger.

The gang rape and many sex scenes in ‘Fritz the Cat’

Welcome back to the list, Bakshi. Fritz the Cat has the distinction of being the first animated film to ever receive an X rating in the United States. The film follows a version of the beloved comic character, imagining him as a revolutionary child of the ’60s and college dropout. Between its questionable racial allegories and gang-rape scene, Fritz the Cat is a lot to handle. However, it’s the bathtub orgy between Fritz and three animal ladies that earns the film a spot on this list.

Fritz the Cat was a huge success, ultimately earning $90 million against its limited budget and generally positive reviews. However, Fritz’s original creator Robert Crumb vocally disapproved of the movie and called it “repressed.”

Human and robot sex in ‘Heavy Metal’

It really shouldn’t be a surprise that Heavy Metal is an odd movie. Directed by Gerald Potterton, the movie is more like an anthology collection that adapts several science fiction and fantasy stories from Heavy Metal magazine. However, the most risque one is likely “Den.”

After a lightning experiment, a nerdy teenager is transformed into Den, a muscular hero. He saves a young woman from being sacrificed to the gods, and she thanks him by performing sexual favors. Later, Den distracts the Queen of this new land by having sex with her. There’s a lot of steaminess, tiny costumes, and even robot sex in this ode to metal.

All the dildos in ‘South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut’

It shouldn’t be surprising to anyone that South Park would make an appearance on a countdown of inappropriate cartoons. From Satan’s relationship with Saddam Hussein (which featured a very realistic-looking sex toy) to the giant clitoris that talks to Stan, the South Park movie is filled with all sorts of inappropriate moments. However, the most interesting part about this movie happened behind the scenes. In creating the South Park movie, show creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker took on the MPAA and mostly won.

Overall, the movie was submitted to the MPAA six times. However, according to Parker, every time the ratings board would flag a scene, the South Park team would change that scene to something far dirtier. To the surprise of everyone, the dirtier scenes were almost always accepted.

The rape at the center of ‘Belladonna of Sadness’

Created in 1973, Belladonna of Sadness is remarkable for being one of the few titles on this list that embraces the weight of sexual assault. Produced by the Japanese animation studio Mushi Production, the film follows a young woman who is brutally raped by a baron and his courtiers on her wedding night. After the assault, she begins to see visions of a phallic-headed spirit that encourages her to take revenge on her attackers. Jeanne eventually makes a deal with the devil so that she can gain enough power to extract her revenge and lead a rebellion. It’s a pointedly beautiful film that portrays sex and assault in a purposefully abstract way.

Where do you even begin with the anime movie Wicked City? Based on the Black Guard mange by Hideyuki Kikuchi, Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s film is basically all about sex. Wicked City exists in a universe where the demon world secretly exists alongside the human world and follows Taki, a member of the secretive police force Black Guard. From casual sex with young women at the bar to the realm-unifying union he later has with the demon Makie, Taki has a lot of sex. However, his most surprising hookup happens with a young woman who later reveals herself to be a spider demon. Why? Because anime.

Every part of ‘Eveready Harton Buried Treasure’

Created in 1929, this animated short was so raunchy, theaters refused to host it. After just watching 30 seconds of it, it’s not difficult to see why. The short features everything from sex with animals and missionary position to a man shooting off his own penis. It’s often called the first porno-cartoon made in the United States, and it was often released informally.

The food orgy in ‘Sausage Party’

You can thank Seth Rogen for the most recent addition to this list. Written by Kyle Hunter, Ariel Shaffir, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Sausage Party originally premiered to shocked reviews and thinkpieces. The R-rated adult animated comedy took place in a world where food could think and feel just like people, making the supermarket a literal deathtrap. After the food’s epic fight with the humans, all the food in the movie celebrates in the only way it knows how — by having an orgy. It goes on for longer than you would think.

Achilles and Patroclus’ romance in ‘Achilles’

Barry Purves’ short about the Greek warrior Achilles is remarkable both for its animation style and for its focus. The short film, constructed from stop-motion animation, is an explicit interpretation of Homer’s Illiad, but it’s a distinctly romantic interpretation. Achilles and Hector’s relationship and romance is sweet, intimate, passionate, and erotic — descriptions that are typically not applied to animated portrayals of sex.

The sex in the Oscar-nominated ‘Anomalisa’

Charlie Kaufman‘s stop-motion animated comedy-drama is one of the most surprisingly beautiful and human films to have been released in recent years. The film follows customer service expert Michael (voiced by David Thewlis) who sees everyone as identical until he meets a unique woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh). The film was the first R-rated animated film to be nominated for a major Academy Award, but it’s on this list because of its transformative sex scene. During an intimate and sweet encounter, Michael and Lisa finally have sex together. However, it isn’t long after they consummate their new romance that “Anomalisa” starts to transform into everyone else. It’s a heart-breaking depiction of unhappiness and possible mental illness.
