Last week, Netflix continued their scary streak with The Open House, a home invasion horror flick starring 13 Reasons Why‘s Dylan Minnette. While we had our own issues with the film as a whole, we understand if you still have a few lingering questions about the way everything went down in the end. There were so many red herrings and apparent clues that it was hard to keep up, and by the film’s conclusion, you might have been left wanting more than one answer. What’s up with all these loose ends? Well, not all of them can be tied up, but we’ve done our best. Here’s what happened at the end of Netflix’s The Open House.

Why didn’t Logan and Naomi leave the house when all this creepy stuff started going down?

Good question. The mother-and-son duo shrug off every strange happening, from items disappearing and the pilot light going out to doors slamming very loudly, perhaps only so that they can meet their grisly fate in the end. Forced coincidence is the name of the game here, so yeah, they stayed in the house despite every single omen that they shouldn’t. Sorry.

What was the deal with Martha, the wacky neighbor lady?

It turns out poor Martha just had Alzheimer’s, and she wasn’t really a threat at all. Her disease just serves a few jump scares for Logan. She wasn’t the murderer.

So what happened at the end of The Open House?

After some supposedly spooky antics over the course of Logan and Naomi’s stay at the mountain mansion, things come to a climax with the appearance of the tormentor in bed next to Naomi and her being tied to a rocking chair. He inexplicably tortures her – like, breaking all her fingers individually for no good reason tortures her – and leaves her a knife. A very disoriented Logan, having just been knocked around by the killer and left outside to freeze drenched in water outside after discovering Chris’ body, soon comes to the rescue, but their solace is short-lived. Logan tries to call the cops, finds all the phones have been disabled,  and his mother is pushed into HIS OWN KNIFE in the basement and dies.

Cue the infuriating sequence that sees the killer remove Logan’s contacts and chase him through the woods into the morning, and concludes with Logan’s strangulation. That’s right. The killer gets away with it. And goes about his merry business to seemingly do it again to another open house.

Who was the killer in The Open House?

Good question! I guess it could have been the ghost of Logan’s father, the crazy old lady down the street, nice guy Chris (who ends up getting murdered), or some other kooky mountain town resident, but nope! He’s no one! We are never given a backstory, or any semblance of his identity, so he’s just a nameless, faceless villain who inexplicably LOVES killing people at open houses! There you have it, folks!
