Woman Crush Wednesday: Happy Birthday To Zooey Deschanel, The True Lucille Ball Of Our Time

It will be nearly a full calendar year from the season six finale to the season seven premiere of New Girl — a season we weren’t even sure that we’d be getting. But now that we are, April 10th really can’t come soon enough. Because let’s not forget, this sitcom has given us the closest example of a modern Lucille Ball, today’s Birthday Gal and Woman Crush Wednesday, Zooey Deschanel.

WHO’S THAT GAL: Zooey Deschanel

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: We’ve thankfully moved past a time where we’re quick to associate words such as “adorkable” and “quirky” with the actress. Luckily, we’re in a new era where it’s only appropriate to address the fact that this actress is in possession of some serious comedic skills. New Girl is still enjoying its run, with the upcoming seventh season serving as the show’s final season, but now that we’ve had nearly a year to reflect on it, plus the reality of the show’s ending, it’s undeniable what Zooey brought to the show, and the landscape of comedic TV shows.

The show progressed into a really sweet ensemble, one that Zooey is still at the front of as charming Jessica Day. Throughout New Girl’s run, the show has afforded her the opportunity to show off her spectacular physical comedy skills, the softer side to her acting through her romance with Nick (Jake Johnson), and the relatable qualities that make the show so appealing through her various dating misadventures and friendship with Cece (Hannah Simone) and roommates Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris).

Zooey’s managed to evolve from an indie film actress to the type of performer than can anchor a major network comedy. She’s also delved into the world of producing and directing (on top of being a fantastic singer and co-founding the HelloGiggles website), showing she’s explored the world behind the cameras as well. While we anticipate (and dread) the send-off for Jess Day, we can’t help but look forward to seeing how she continues to transform her career in the future.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Zooey got her start in the films Almost Famous, Manic, The Good Girl, and All The Real Girls. We watch her every December in Elf, and she’s also known for her roles in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Failure to Launch, The Happening, and Yes Man. 500 Days of Summer became an instant classic when it was released, and she’s also popped up in Our Idiot Brother, Your Highness, and Rock the Kasbah, as well as lent her voice to projects such as The Simpsons, and the Trolls movie. And of course, she’s been our favorite roommate/teacher/pal since New Girl introduced us to Jessica Day in 2011.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: New Girl’s seventh and final season premieres April 10, 2018 on Fox. We’ll just be rewatching the six previous seasons on repeat until we make it to the spring, so won’t you join us in that adventure?
