Blade Runner 2049

This acclaimed sci-fi drama picks up decades after where the original Blade Runner left off, taking the unlikely franchise in a bold new direction under the guidance of director Denis Villeneuve. Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford star in this bold tale, one that wowed critics with its originality (a real surprise considering this is another sequel to a decades-old cult classic). You won’t be able to rent Blade Runner 2049 until January, so be prepared to pay full price to go on this experience.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell star in this intense psychological horror drama from the director behind The Lobster, a similarly unsettling and mind bending theatrical experience. Decider’s Joe Reid had this to say about the film:
“The movie feels like it should be setting up a morality play, for Farrell and Kidman’s characters at the very least. But in the end, there is no moral decision that makes any sense. Nor is there a logical solution that the audience could holler at Farrell about. [Director Yorgos] Lanthimos puts his characters into a strait jacket where there are no good decisions to be made. And the audience is just left to watch them writhe. If that’s not your thing, you’ll probably have some company. But it’s a wicked, unsettling ride while it lasts.”

Gremlins

It’s the week after Christmas, and odds are you still have some or all of your decorations up. That makes Gremlins, a movie set at Christmas but not as filled with merriment as, say, Elf, the perfect rewatch right now. The horror comedy is wrapped up in holiday trappings to be sure, but the real thrust of the story comes when a kid gets a bizarre creature called a mogwai for a pet and the havoc that’s unleashed when he dares get the little fuzzball wet (you never get a mogwai wet!). You can get this ’80s classic right now on iTunes for just under a buck, making it a great thing to put on while you take down all those decorations.
