Evan Peters was just about as terrifying as it gets on American Horror Story: Cult this year. That blue hair alone is nightmare-inducing. So if you’re looking for a nice, underrated indie gem, Adult World is available on Netflix now and will cleanse that Peters palate for you.
Peters stars as Alex, a normal dude with normal hair working at an adult store in Syracuse, NY. When Amy (Emma Roberts) stumbles into the store in need of a job, literally everyone can tell that sparks are flying all over the room. The charming film is a true showcase for Roberts, as Amy is just about as millennial as it gets. As she pursues her poetry career and hunts down John Cusack’s Rat, essentially forcing him to be her mentor, she also turns to Alex for support and encouragement and yes, feelings. This gives Peters the chance to be endearing and almost sneaky with how quickly you’ll find yourself attracted to his character. But ultimately, it’s just refreshing to know he’s got that ability in his arsenal.
Because Evans has gravitated toward some rather interesting roles in his career. Not just in the American Horror Story series either: that Quicksilver scene in X-Men: Days of Future Past (you know the one) remains one of the most exciting cinematic moments of the decade, and he’s really let himself slip into projects such as Elvis & Nixon, The Lazarus Effect, and Safelight. Adult World allows him to flex the acting muscle that lets viewers know, it’s okay to have an on-screen crush on him from time to time. You know, the reassurance that he can play a softer, gentler, nonviolent, non cult-leading type is just a nice reminder.
Adult World is your standard coming of age story, with a dash of porn titles (not so much porn images) sprinkled in throughout, for just a pinch of kink. It’s a sweet and delightful film that gives Peters, Roberts, and Cusack a nice stage for their talents. And for Peters especially, it’s a welcomed opportunity to switch it up and play a total normie for once. Maybe don’t expect him to do too much more of that though.
