Beware, New Yorkers: aliens are among us!
Well, not quite. In a stunt to promote The X-Files, premiering Wednesday, January 3 on FOX, alien invaders have taken over newspaper dispensers around the city and are scaring the crap out of locals just looking to grab a free copy of the New York Post.
In this viral video, unsuspecting New Yorkers who open the newspaper dispenser are shocked to see a green arm reach out towards them. “Oh, SH*T,” yells one man. “Holy f*ck!” yells another. In the second prank, an animatronic alien head pops out of the neighboring dispenser, and steam rises from the machine as it blinks and turns its body. “Oh HELL no,” yells a city worker. “How did it do that?” asks a passerby.
Watching New Yorkers freak out is hilarious, but the alien is so creepy looking and seems so real that we can’t really blame them for being shocked.
At the end of the video, black SUVs pull up and special agents run towards the aliens, yelling at bystanders to clear the area so that they can contain the extraterrestrial threat. The video then cuts to a similar shot of The X-Files in which Agent Mulder (David Duchovny) and Agent Scully (Gillian Anderson) storm onto the scene of their own alien attack. “The truth still lies in the X-Files folder,” says Anderson’s voiceover.
The X-Files‘ return on January 3, 2018 will mark the 25th anniversary of the show’s original premiere in 1993. Prepare for the new season by streaming the entire series on Hulu now.
