On Monday morning, the Will & Grace revival press tour and NBC’s launch of Megyn Kelly Today collided, but at least one W&G star is looking to distance herself as much as possible.

In an Instagram post that began, innocently enough, as a photograph of a bowl of cucumber slices, Debra Messing commented that she had no idea that the interview would be taking place during Megyn Kelly‘s show, and that the press itinerary only read “Today show appearance.” Kelly’s show is technically the 9:00AM hour of Today. Messing continued: “Regret going on. Dismayed by her comments.”

Those comments happened during an interview segment with all four Will & Grace cast members, Kelly committed an awkward faux pas with an audience member, jokingly asking the W&G superfan, “Is it true you became a lawyer, and you became gay, because of Will?” Kelly later wrapped up the segment by again joking, “I don’t know about the lawyer thing, but the Will & Grace thing and the gay thing is going to work out.”

It was mostly a dumb, un-woke Mom Joke from Kelly, though paired with Kelly’s history of conservative cultural comedy — helpfully cataloged on Sunday night’s Last Week Tonight —it’s no surprise that Messing was dismayed.

The “gay thing” joke was just one awkward moment in an ocean of them for Kelly, whose attempts to rebrand herself from a Fox News ideologue to your slightly embarrassing aunt have been hitting snag after snag. On Wednesday’s show, Kelly interviewed Jane Fonda and Robert Redford about their upcoming Netflix movie Our Souls at Night and managed to earn one hell of a stink-eye from Fonda for her questions about plastic surgery and Fonda’s age.
