This is a great season for righting streaming wrongs. After years of being unavailable on streaming, Will & Grace is now finally available to watch on Hulu. Not only that, but the streaming service will be the home for NBC’s upcoming Will & Grace revival.
Though it was just as much of a cultural phenomenon as Friends or Seinfeld, Will & Grace has been one of those shows that’s been chronically and sadly missing from streaming for years. From The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Everybody Loves Raymond, there are many of these streaming holes, especially when it comes to sitcoms from the ’90s and early aughts. However, it seems as though Hulu has been trying to fix these oversights. The streaming service announced during TCA 2017 that it acquired the rights to the TGIF lineup, which includes every season of Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, Perfect Strangers, and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, and it recently acquired The Golden Girls. The Will & Grace acquisition means that all 194 episodes of the series will be available to Hulu subscribers. The original eight seasons of the sitcom will also be available on the NBC app and through pay TV providers with authentication, Deadline reports.
Hulu’s deal also extends to the show’s revival, which will premiere on Thursday, September 28. New episodes of the series will be on Hulu the day after their broadcast premiere. Will & Grace, which received 83 Emmy nominations and 16 wins over its run and has a devoted fan base, is a big get for Hulu, but it’s also an acquisition that makes a lot of sense. Hulu already has the rights to several NBC shows including This Is Us. Not only that, but Hulu is partially owned by NBC’s parent company, Comcast.
“There’s no question that Will & Grace has resonated with audiences since the series made its broadcast premiere,” Hulu Chief Content Officer Joel Stillerman said in an interview with Deadline. “To be able to bring such an iconic show into the streaming universe for the first time ever is an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. This landmark deal will allow fans to re-watch their favorite moments ahead of the series premiere, as well as bring Will & Grace and its cast of characters to a whole new audience.” So if you want to know what the whole Decider team will be doing for the next week, it’ll probably involve memorizing Karen’s amazing one-liners.
