Netflix Drops Trailer For ‘Neo Yokio,’ Its Crazytown Anime Starring Jaden Smith

At this point Netflix is known for having some pretty weird shows. If you need an example of what I’m talking about, look no further than its international acquisition Pompidou or Maria Bamford‘s fabulously weird Lady Dynamite. However, even by Netflix’s zaniest standards, Neo Yokio looks to be bananas.

The series is written and produced by Ezra Koenig — yes, that Ezra Koenig. The singer of Vampire Weekend. It’s also written by Nick Weidenfeld and is described as a “postmodern homage to classic anime, English literature, and modern New York fashion and culture.” Put another way, the anime takes place in the fictional Neo Yokio, the greatest, most advanced city in the world, and follows a lovesick demon slayer who’s just trying to make it through high school. The show seems to follow the beats you would expect from a comedy-focused anime, not unlike FLCL or One-Punch Man. There’s a lot of insanity and action, but at the end of the day, it’s really about being a normal person and trying to find happiness. Just, you know, demons, high fashion, and bloggers are involved because anime transcends explanation.

However, what makes takes this show from insane to bonkers is its cast. Not only does Jaden Smith voice the lead character Kaz Kaan, but Jude Law, Susan Sarandon, Steve Buscemi, Jason Schwartzman, Tavi Gevinson, Desus Nice, and The Kid Mero are all involved. Yep, you read that correctly. Just in case you don’t believe me, here’s proof from the trailer:

Truly, Neo Yokio may be the most insane collaboration Netflix has ever put its name on. You can bet I will be following this bubblegum manic show obsessively.
