The Black Room

Powered by Reelgood

There’s nothing like the terrifying bliss that comes with a good horror flick, but sometimes, it’s good to put all that prestige aside and indulge in a little campy goodness. While the definition of B-Horror may have changed over time, the delightful badness of these kinds of movies – one that sees overdramatic death, ridiculous gore, and nonsensical plot developments – is just too much fun to pass up.

Netflix has an entire sub-genre dedicated to B-Horror Movies, with grade-A titles like Pound of FleshLittle Dead Rotting Hood, and 3-Headed Shark Attack, succumbing to a viewing of one of these flicks is damn near irresistible. Embark on the ride of your life (or death) as wave after wave of storytelling cliché washes over you, as over-rehearsed screams from unseasoned actors pierce your ears, and hilariously cheesy special effects round out suspenseful sequences.

B-Horror movies are the shameless gems of the genre – we wouldn’t have all the good without all this enjoyable bad. Here are some of our favorite picks from Netflix’s B-Horror category – you won’t want to watch these alone.

'The Black Room'

Perhaps the platform’s most recent addition to the category, The Black Room leans into every genre cliché there is, and keeps you hooked in the process. You’ve heard this one before – young couple moves into the house of their dreams, discovers the cellar is hosting some dark, sinister spirit, and soon it’s time for this demon to wreak some serious havoc on these poor people! This movie has everything: a creepy old lady with ambiguous intentions, a bra-clad blonde who walks right into evil’s clutches, and dramatic red lighting that appears on cue every time!

'Sharknado'

It wouldn’t be a B-Horror list without our beloved Sharknado, and luckily, Netflix has a hold on the iconic flick and its shamelessly bad sequels. Sharknado‘s first installment sees a freak hurricane tear through Los Angeles and bring airborne sharks with it, and as one would expect, complete insanity follows. Each of the sequels are just as wonderfully campy as the former, and the absolutely bananas performances and terrible special effects really cement Sharknado as the ultimate guilty pleasure. Grab some friends, drink some hurricanes, and get ready for the RIDE OF YOUR LIFE!

'Zombeavers'

Sometimes, the best part of a B-movie is its ridiculous title, and Zombeavers is living (or dead?) proof of that. We start with a classic cabin in the woods premise; a bunch of hot young people head to a lake for some rest and relaxation, and all seems to go swimmingly until their bikini-and-sunblock bliss is disrupted by… beavers. Not just any beavers, either – zombie beavers! Obviously, a lot of bucktoothed butchery ensues, and these college kids learn that these undead dam-builders are not to be trifled with.

'Spiders'

Arachnophobes, take heed – this one’s not for the faint of heart. These eight-legged freaks aren’t your run-of-the-mill arachnids; when an abandoned Soviet space station infested with car-sized, carnivorous spiders crashes into a Manhattan subway, every New Yorker’s worst nightmare is realized. With gems of dialogue like “So that’s what this is about… huge… spiders?” and top-notch special effects, this obscenely over-the-top flick will probably split your sides more than it will scare you. Either way, though, it offers a supremely entertaining experience.

'Exeter'

Ah, yes, the “friend group gets possessed by an evil spirit one by one after dabbling in the occult” flick. Exeter might not be intentionally humorous, but boy, is it fun and fast. After partying hard and trying out some black magic in an abandoned mental hospital (school for the feeble minded?), a group of youths find themselves infiltrated by a seriously pissed spirit, one that drives them to make their own Ouija board, perform a DIY exorcism, and set each other on fire. Don’t these idiot teens know better by now than to mess with this stuff?
