Cult Corner: ‘Drawing with Skinner’ Is a Weird, Psychedelic, and Soothing Delight

When we talk about streaming culture, we’re usually enthusing about what’s new, but one of the best things about streaming is how it’s made old and obscure cult hits available to a new generation. Presenting Cult Corner: your weekly look into hidden gems and long-lost curiosities that you can find on streaming.

When you think of painting tutorials, you probably think of something calm, soothing, and lined with little happy trees. One of Super Deluxe’s latest series is anything but that. Welcome to the heavy metal and drug-fueled artistic world that is Drawing with Skinner.

The YouTube series is hosted by Skinner, an Oakland artist known for his heavy metal album covers and psychedelic murals. Each episode Skinner invites a different artist, musician, or actor to paint with him, and they dish on drug use and pop culture while slapping paint on their canvases. Drawing with Skinner rarely gets more complicated than that, and there’s something weirdly soothing about watching two cool people create whatever weird thing pops into their heads. The YouTube series is what would happen if the artistically accepting atmosphere of Bob Ross met a lot of drugs and Adult Swim’s late night block.

It makes sense that the series would have this vibe. After all, Drawing with Skinner comes from Super Deluxe, a Turner-owned entertainment company that was originally connected with Adult Swim. The two companies split ways in 2008, but that didn’t stop Super Deluxe and its arsenal of impressive comedy talent from continuing to create content. The YouTube channel has featured everyone from Eric Wareheim and Tim Heidecker to Maria Bamford. Heidecker in particular has remained a part of the channel. The comedian and creator even covered the RNC for the channel in 2016.

Though it only premiered in May of 2017, Drawing with Skinner is already a gem for the channel. Each episode clocks in at about 20 minutes, and guests range from DJ Gaslamp Killer to Angie Tribeca star Andrée Vermeulen. If you love The Eric Andre Show but always secretly wished there was painting involved, check out Drawing with Skinner.
