Lucasfilm, which oversees production on all things Star Wars, announced late today that the new Untitled Han Solo film — currently in the middle of production — will “move forward with a directorial change.” That’s right. In a stunning turn of events, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are departing the Han Solo project in the middle of the film’s production.
StarWars.com posted a press release today that quoted both Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy as well as Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Kennedy’s statement read:
“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.”
Lord and Miller had this to say:
“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew.”
The news of Lord and Miller’s departure is particularly startling since principal photography on the film started in February, meaning five months have been spent shooting the film and it must be relatively close to completion. The still-untitled film stars Hail, Caesar! breakout Alden Ehrenreich as a young Han Solo. Atlanta star Donald Glover will be playing Lando Calrissian, and Woody Harrelson, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, Westworld standout Thandie Newton, and Fleabag mastermind Phoebe Waller-Bridge all co-star in brand new roles.
The Untitled Han Solo film is still slated to premiere on May 25, 2018.
