Just after the show’s latest trailer was released and ahead of its seventh season premiere in July, sources have confirmed that Season 8 of Game of Thrones will only be 6 episodes long. After much speculation surrounding comments made by HBO programming president Casey Bloys, the network finally gave in and delivered the unfortunate news.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, viewers do not have to feel abandoned as HBO is already working on five potential series to serve as a successor to the wildly popular fantasy drama from creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Author George R.R. Martin, whose series of books the show is based on, recently stated: “What we do have here is an order for four — now five — pilot scripts. How many pilots will be filmed, and how many series might come out of that, remains to be seen.” With the new season rapidly approaching and still much storyline to be resolved, viewers can only hope that the last six episodes will do the epic show some justice.
