The 16 Worst Boyfriends of 2016

What a banner year it has been for shitty boyfriends on TV. They’ve ranged from lazy to straight up sabotaging their girlfriend’s passion project to abandoning their brand new fiancé. Yikes, bros. Let’s hope these dudes are making some serious New Year’s resolutions to get their shit together.

2016 presented us with new, unique stories on television — some fantastic, and some fantastically devastating. Many times, that was due to an underwhelming gentleman friend. Here, we celebrate and chide the TV characters that truly disappointed us when it came to their boyfriend duties. The cheating, the disappearing, the rumor-spreading: you guys are better than that. Or you should be.

Let’s be clear: some boyfriends made the list for being just a bit too extra. Not knowing when to take a step back, is sometimes just as terrible as taking too many steps back. You know what I mean. And if not, well this list will present you with a handful of examples.

Here’s your warning, one that most of these guys would never be courteous enough to give you: there are spoilers ahead.

Dudes: learn from these guys. Don’t be like them. Ladies: be grateful you aren’t with a Lawrence or a Drew or a Jax. And if you are, run! They might make for good, albeit frustrating, TV, but no one needs this IRL, that’s for sure.

Drew, 'Search Party'

This fucking guy. Probably every entry will (or should) start with that sentence, but man did this guy earn it. Drew (John Reynolds) was such a lump on Search Party. Surrounded by a group of friends that was interesting, unique, and exciting, he was such a blob. But the fact that he was so whiny and unsupportive of his girlfriend Dory (Alia Shawkat) is what makes him the worst. He went through the whole elaborate setup of making it look like someone broke into their apt and hung up  a “threatening” sign on the wall to try and get her to give up on the investigation. Really, bro? It’s one thing to not support her new hobby, it’s quite another to sabotage it. These two were never on the same page, it’s a miracle she even allowed him to be around for as long as she did. If Drew were to disappear, would anyone really set out on a search party for him?

Lawrence, 'Insecure'

Twitter’s number one enemy! Lawrence (Jay Ellis) on Insecure remains one of the most divisive characters of the year. The HBO comedy started out with him lounging around the apartment in his sweatpants, no motivation in sight. While Issa considered bouncing, he managed to find just a smidge of drive, but a massive ego as well. Declaring himself too good for the tech job he was being offered? Come on. But in the final episode of the season, he strings Issa along, saying he wants to chat. When she rushes out of her girls’ weekend, she returns home to find that he’s packed his stuff and fled the relationship, of course banging another woman in the process. If he wasn’t responsible for indirectly repairing Issa and Molly’s friendship, he’d be the absolute worst.

Jimmy, 'You're The Worst'

Photo: FX

Look, the title of this show, and the two previous seasons of the FXX comedy You’re The Worst let viewers know what they were in for. There’s a slim chance Jimmy (Chris Geere) will ever get it together and be a true gent. And the times that he does surprise with his sweetness are much more the exception than the rule. So when things looked like they were turning around, we should’ve known better. He popped the question to Gretchen (Aya Cash), and the second she declared them “a family now”… he got in his car and drove away, leaving her to watch fireworks alone. That’s a new low, even for this guy.

Josh, 'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'

Oh, Josh. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend really took us on a journey at the end of season 1. Greg (Santino Fontana) couldn’t get it together enough to tell Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) how he felt, but Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) and Valencia broke up, and in the next moment he was hooking up with Rebecca. Has she lived up to the title of the show in the second season? Well, yes. But Josh basically used her, moving into her apartment for free room and board with no intentions of getting serious with her. That’s not very nice, Josh.

Alex Cole, 'Casual'

It’s easy to be drawn in by Alex Cole’s (Tommy Dewey) charm on Casual. But if we’ve learned anything from the Hulu original series, it’s that this guy is 100% not boyfriend material, no matter how much he tries to convince himself or others that he is. In season two, he sabotaged his ex’s engagement (to his boss no less) because he thought he wanted to be with her again. Except when she moved in, he couldn’t wait for her to move out. Whoops?

Jax Taylor, 'Vanderpump Rules'

The new season of Vanderpump Rules has already been quite a doozy. In the first episode, Jax started to tell everyone that he walked in on Kristen going down on his girlfriend Brittany, an act both of the women have denied. But don’t think that would stop Jax from repeating it to everyone in sight, and still manage to declare himself the victim of the whole thing. Poor baby!

Ross Poldark, 'Poldark'

Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) wasn’t just a bad boyfriend in Season 2 of Poldark, he was a bad husband. After baby Julia’s death, Ross cooled on his loyal wife Demelza and entertained a flirtation with former flame Elizabeth. By the end of the season, he had forced himself into Elizabeth’s room, made love to her without clear permission, and left her pregnant and married to his rival. Robby, 'New Girl'

Photo: FOX

Honestly why is this guy still hanging around the New Girl crew? It was funny when Robby (Nelson Franklin) showed up to Schmidt’s bachelor party last season, even though he was obsessed with Cece forever. Then he did the same thing, always hanging around Jess, even when she wasn’t really feeling it. It seems to have worked out for him this one time, but come on, guy. Sometimes being TOO attentive is worse than not being attentive enough. Just, learn how to get a hint.

Alex Karev, 'Grey's Anatomy'

How silly of Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) of Grey’s Anatomy not to realize that Alex (Justin Chambers) nearly beating another man to death, despite being completely wrong about the guy’s intentions towards her, was not the romantic action of a good boyfriend! Couldn’t she see that Alex only reverts to his brutish and maladjusted nature because he is a damaged soul?? Okay, nuts to that. Alex is the worst, and he should go to jail. — Joe Reid

Adrian Pimento, 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'

16 Worst Boyfriends of 2016 Adrian Pimento – Brooklyn 99
Photo: FOX

Adrian Pimento (Jason Mantzoukas) and Rosa Diaz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are made for each other, which is why this dude needs to get. it. together. Last season, they both realized they were attracted to each other, so when Rosa finally stepped up and said something, he ran away! Their delightfully dysfunctional relationship went from 0 to engaged before we knew it, but then he had to scurry away with no contact or else he’d be killed by a mob boss. This season, the two came so close to tying the knot, even though he kept interpreting everything as a “sign” that they shouldn’t get married. In short, this guy’s got no problem committing murder, but when it comes to committing holy matrimony, well, someone needs to man up.

Logan Huntzberger, 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life'

16 Worst Boyfriends of 2016 Logan - Gilmore Girls
Photo: NETFLIX

Debates have raged for YEARS about which of Rory Gilmore’s three boyfriends — Dean, Jess, and Logan — have been the best, which the worst. Now that we’ve all been able to revisit Stars Hollow one more time with Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, one of those answers, at least, has become clear: Logan (Matt Czuchry) is the worst. Dean is mostly the same, and Jess certainly seems to have gotten over himself and his teen-loner self-aggrandizement. Logan, though? Cheating on his socialite fiancee with Rory. Still doing the poor-little-rich-boy thing. And worst of all: still hanging around with that steampunk-tea-party band of idle-rich insufferables known as the Life and Death Brigade. Run far and run fast, Rory. — Joe Reid

Earn, 'Atlanta'

16 Worst Boyfriends of 2016 Earn – Atlanta
Photo: FX

It’s not the date episode, it’s really not. In Atlanta when Earn (Donald Glover) takes his on-off girlfriend but full-time baby mama on a date, he has to ask his friend for $20 to cover the date. This is understandable, even though he should’ve asked for $40 to be safe. Then he had to spend the entire date sweating about the price! And that’s his problem. He doesn’t have enough foresight for his relationship with Vanessa to be on top of things, like being ready on time and being a presentable date to a party that means a lot to her (and her career). This guy could really benefit from thinking one step ahead and making himself a damn to-do list is all.

Parker Gail, 'Documentary Now!'

In the Documentary Now! episode parodying Spalding Gray’s Swimming to Cambodia, Bill Hader plays Parker Gail, a monologist whose colorful and rambling accounts of his life are in stark contrast to the reality-check rebuttals by (among others) his girlfriend Ramona (played perfectly by Lennon Parham). While in his own words, Parker is a nebbishy eccentric, Ramona’s decidedly un-romantic assessment of him makes him seem like an utterly insufferable boob. — Joe Reid

Timothy Olyphant, 'The Grinder'

Why is Timothy Olyphant always hanging around his girlfriend Claire’s workplace on The Grinder? Oh, and he just sprung the news on her that he rearranged his own work schedule to spend more time with her, too? Dude, back up. If he wasn’t so hot, this would be extremely annoying.

Jianyu, 'The Good Place'

16 Worst Boyfriends of 2016 Jianyu - The Good Place
Photo: NBC

The thing about Jianyu isn’t that he’s a bad person. He actually seems like a pretty sweet guy, all things considered, especially on The Good Place. The problem is … he’s not Jianyu at all. Like series protagonist Eleanor, Jianyu (real name: Jason Mendoza) is in the Good Place by mistake. And he’s been partnered up with Tahani by mistake. Of course, Tahani doesn’t know that; she thinks the reason she and her perfectly-appointed (if completely silent) partner aren’t making it happen is her fault. It’s kind of awful, if you think of it that way. — Joe Reid

Todd, 'The Last Man on Earth'

Todd (Mel Rodriguez) being in a relationship with Gail and Melissa at the same time on The Last Man on Earth — what the heck was that about? It took him way too long to come clean to both of them, and the back and forth just wasn’t cute. There are so few people left on Earth, dude — be nice to the ones that are still hanging around!
