The only good thing about a nightmare is knowing that you can wake up from it — or can you?

That was the horrifying notion that propelled Wes Craven‘s landmark thriller A Nightmare on Elm Street. The film pitted a group of teens (including a young Johnny Depp) against the vile Freddy Krueger, a child killer burned alive by the angry parents of his victims. His spirit comes back and haunts kids in their dreams. As they die grisly, gruesome, ridiculous deaths in the nightmare world, their bodies perish in the real one.

What sets the Nightmare on Elm Street films apart from other horror franchises is the intensity of these horrible deaths — some border on the straight up absurd. Depp’s character is swallowed by his own bed, another character is force fed to death, and Krueger’s image bursts through the chest cavity of someone else. All in all, it’s a hilariously horrifying way to spend the Halloween season.
