Randall Wallace, the screenwriter behind the Oscar winning Braveheart, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he is penning a Passion of the Christ sequel along with Mel Gibson.

The sequel, which will focus on the resurrection, came about when Gibson and Wallace worked together on the soon to be released Hacksaw Ridge.

Wallace, who was a religion major in college, told THR that he “always wanted to tell this story. The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”

While Gibson has yet to officially confirm his involvement, many have garnered that he is signed on since he expressed his interest in doing a sequel at a recent speaking engagement.

Though no studio or financial backing has been lined up for the project yet, Wallace is confident that both will come through as the film focuses on a “huge and sacred subject,” he told THR. “The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger.”

The Passion of the Christ was released in 2004 and was a financial success, making $612 million worldwide and scoring three Academy Award nominations. It was also considered very controversial, not only for its extreme depiction of the bodily harm suffered by Jesus, but also because many felt the film was anti-Semitic.
