2015 won’t go down as the first year that streaming series were nominated for major awards, but it will go down as the first year they were in the majority. Netflix led all networks with a total of eight nominations, besting traditional awards hog HBO, which was right behind with seven nominations.

In the Best Comedy Series – Television category, four of the six nominated shows were from streaming platforms. And from three different streaming platforms at that. Casual (Hulu), Mozart in the Jungle (Amazon), Orange Is the New Black (Netflix), and Transparent (Amazon) joined HBO’s Silicon Valley and Veep as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s choices for the best in TV comedy.

Streaming was all over the ballot for television, and it showed up for the first time in the movie categories as well, as Idris Elba picked up a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation. It was his second nomination in as many days, after showing up in the same category with the SAG Awards.

Meanwhile, Netflix’s Narcos represented for streaming in the Best Television Drama category, joined by Starz’ Outlander, HBO’s Game of Thrones, USA’s Mr. Robot, and FOX’s Empire. Narcos also got a nod for its lead actor Wagner Moura. Also in the acting categories, Aziz Ansari was recognized for his work on Netflix’s Master of None, and Lily Tomlin and Ben Mendelsohn repeated their Emmy nominations for Grace and Frankie and Bloodline, respectively.

Having a breakout year of its own on the awards circuit was Starz, which picked up six nominations in total. Outlander nabbed three of those, including Best Drama Series and nods for stars Caitriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies. Starz’ Flesh and Bone picked up a pair of nominations as well, for Best Limited Series and one for star Sarah Hay.

On the film side, critics’ and commercial favorites Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian all rebounded from their shutouts at the SAG awards to pick up Best Picture nominations. Todd Haynes’ Carol scored five nominations to lead the field, including two in Best Actress for stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. SAG Awards nomination leader Trumbo scored nominations for stars Bryan Cranston and Helen Mirren, but nothing else, while The Big Short ended up as the most nominated comedy with four nods.
