Why You Shouldn’t Be Sleeping On Crackle

There’s a cool streaming site that offers amazing horror flicks, a flurry of Oscar-winners, oodles of hilarious comedies, some classic television shows, and tons of original content. Oh, and it’s totally and absolutely free. Interested in signing up? Well, you might already have it on your Roku, Apple TV, or streaming device. It’s Crackle. Yup, while you’ve been busy Neflix and chilling, you’ve been sleeping on one of the original titans of streaming content.

In the last year, Crackle has been quietly upping the ante on its programming, but unlike many of its competitors, Crackle hasn’t also been upping the price on its service. That’s right: Crackle is still totally and completely free. And judging by their new tagline, “Always Free,” we think they’re planning on keeping it that way. You could almost presume that they’re sticking with their policy as a counter to their competitors’ ever-increasing prices.

Another thing that Crackle does differently than Netflix and Hulu? It offers real ratings numbers. Back in July, Crackle touted that their original film Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser wracked up 1 million views in five days. They also pledged that they would offer total ratings transparency. We might be told by Netflix that House of Cards and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are big hits, but we have no idea how they would rank against cable TV numbers. While Crackle’s competitors are banking on hype, Crackle is totally fine letting us know how good and how bad they are doing.

Right now, they should be poised to do really, really well. Additions to the platform in October included such classic shows as Mad About You and NewsRadio and films that vary from Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic to Sacha Baron Cohen’s manic Bruno. Crackle also premiered their first ever original animated series SuperMansion this week. The series spoofs superhero films and features the voices of stars like Bryan Cranston, Chris Pine, Seth Green, and Key & Peele. And next month the thrilling new drama The Art of More debuts.

Crackle also made some additions this month that suggest they’re aware that they’ve branded themselves as a “dude’s streaming service.” Both Dawson’s Creek and Party of Five were added this month. Both shows have a distinctly feminine vibe — Paula Cole, anyone? — and fill a programming void for the service. It’s a signal that going forward, Crackle will add more classic nighttime soaps and rom com fare.

The bottom line, though, is that in an ever-changing streaming landscape, Crackle is still relevant. As the game board shifts and streaming becomes a more mainstream way of consuming entertainment, it’s easy to focus on what’s new, what’s loud, and what’s more expensive. Crackle has been quietly reinventing itself while staying true to its original business model. There’s no better deal on streaming now than getting everything on Crackle for free.
